They have developed coping strategies through their religious faith to deal with this double-bind.  The integration of spiritual disciplines within the context of a psychological group process may be useful in helping African-American women overcome a sense of woundedness and achieve a better quality of life.  The project director led two groups of African-American women from Payne Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Church in psycho-spiritual process groups. Case studies were done using one-on-one interviews. Eight women were selected on the basis of their potential to contribute to the study. Assessment was done on the basis of their relationships with their father, the struggles they had in coming to know God as Father, and what proved helpful to them. The literature review includes research in the fields of family life, spiritual formation, the role of the father in child development, the process of healing childhood pain, and Christian education. There are biblical principles given from the scriptures and how they inform us about a relationship with God as our Father. The ultimate goal was to describe the experience of living fatherless. It looked at the introduction of art into the worship experience through the creativity of congregation members. It was woven from the threads of feminist theology and spirituality. The Ignatian examen provided the warp of the conversation. The women reported new understandings of scripture, worship and their understanding of God. The thesis is that sexual abuse negatively affects a little girl's imagery of God and her self-esteem, but ultimately is not the final determiner of how she relates to God or how she views herself.
