Three primary servanthood roles for deacons emerge in this study: worship, fellowship, and prayer. A deacon's role is not narrowly liturgical, but nonliturgical roles are developing more slowly. As these deacons respond to their servanthood tasks, their stories illuminate the diaconate's influence on their faith and on the life of the congregation. Data gathered from 28 participants by an original questionnaire was analyzed in order to determine: if the group had a positive effect; which of Clebsch and Jaekle's four functions of pastoral care was most in effect; what variables (classifying and Pruyser's seven diagnostic) were most related to positive effect; and what program resources were reported as having the most positive effect. Understanding helping ministries comprises one aspect of practical theology. Christian social responsibility calls for development of service gifts for doing good to persons outside as well as within the church body (Galatians 6:10).  Biblical, theological and historical roots of helping persons in need undergird methods and procedures of implementation. Helping and loving for Jesus' sake include counseling, material assistance, and the use of referrals, as opportunity arises (Ephesians 5:16).
