Research includes: 1) studies by Dr Selye and others showing that the body's biochemical reactions to stress result in hormonal imbalances which can promote abnormal cell growth and lessen immunological activity. Cancer is understood to result from depressed immunological activity due to stress; 2) drs LeShan, Kissen, and others have demonstrated that life history and present personality style predispose a person to contracting cancer; 3) placebo studies show that a person's beliefs and expectations have real impact on physiological functioning. To encourage hope and zestful living is therfore seen as essential to treatment of cancer patients. Cancer counseling recommends exploration of stressful events prior to diagnosis. Treatment of psychological wounds helps restore hope and the will to live. In addition to standard psychotherapeutic techniques, cancer counseling uses relaxation and visualisation techniques as well as hypnosis to aid in physical healing, pain control and the maintenance of hope."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133354010083328,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:17:56.978Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:31:00Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:36:05Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"484ed4da-848c-4eb7-bd52-c1881328d916","accessControl_ssim":["e3c020d7-cdf9-4c9b-808e-4e88c785032d"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The use of graphics of bible characters in teaching a model of decision-making"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:30:59Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:14:54Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["4b8545d7-ce5b-4634-9a0c-8171d6961c86"],"hasLease_ssim":["d7b59b57-48ef-413b-a6a2-50a6b8a64419"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Dorothy Jean Furnish"],"year_tesim":["1982"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Donald P Haskell"],"publisher_tesim":["Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Bible","Biography","Education","Decision making","United Methodist Church","Bible--Study"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This field project was a congregational study of twelve Bible characters as models of decision-making. The traditional psychological understanding of self-identity has been that one develops an identity through commitments. This has been opposed by those who understand identity to be developed by avoiding commitments and the obligations. Indeed, the necessity for developing an identity at all has been challenged by the concept of self-actualization. The paper examines Christian doctrine concerning self-identity and self-actualization, what it is and how it is developed. The concept of commitment will be re-introduced as basic to self-identity. It focuses on the Shadow, an aspect of human nature and a source of difficulty for the Christian church which has not been dealt with realistically. Jung's concept of the Shadow is examined. Examples of the operation of the Shadow include: the Iranian hostage crisis, the Crusades, the Inquisition, the Salem witch trials, the moral majority, the Ku Klux Klan. A biographical incident is recounted. The traditional anti-Shadow position of the Christian church is described, with examples of theological, doctrinal, moral-ethical, liturgical and architectural over-emphasis on the white-bright-light side. The consequence of over-valuing of purity is described: a repressed Shadow which operates secretly from the unconscious, producing various unwholesome effects. A theological-psychological model relating Shadow and Christ envisions the 'ultimate context' within which each unique therapy unfolds. Through 'crucifixion', neurotic suffering due to one-sided development can be transformed into religiously meaningful suffering."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133176149573633,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:15:07.357Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:30:32Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:13:05Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"0979fcef-8129-46bd-a240-f00810f0fbb1","accessControl_ssim":["b36e3910-7212-468a-bcad-8d9fe1e5491d"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The unconscious church: an exploration of the church complex in a Christian congregation"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:30:31Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:23:13Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["e87492b9-95df-4e46-941f-0570a3a35172"],"hasLease_ssim":["30084dbc-7472-409a-8830-98cf6a5bbf46"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"advisor_tesim":["Paul Huss"],"year_tesim":["1982"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["John Cyrus Fuhrmeister"],"publisher_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"subject_tesim":["Congregations","Pastoral psychology","Church--Marks","Subconsciousness"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This paper sets forth the hypothesis of an unconscious church standing in the same relationship to the conscious church as the individual's unconscious does to his conscious psyche. An experimental method is described by which this unconscious church is revealed in a congregation. Jung's word association technique is adapted and used to test a congregational sample. Results reveal that half or more of the subjects in the sample gave significant responses to 14 out of the 100 words. Mathematically, this is more than would be expected to occur by chance. It is concluded that this pattern of 14 words demonstrates the presence of the unconscious church. Analysis of the stimulus words and the words given in response to those stimulus words reveals that this unconscious church is concerned with relationships with God and others. It evidences a struggle between good and evil, between the archetypal symbol of the hero and that of the betrayer, between the ego and the shadow. The family of the alcoholic was seldom seen at the clinic on other than superficial levels; even such limited observation demonstrated a vicious circle of anxiety and frustration. Parish ministers and family doctors often come in contact with alcoholism but fail to recognize it. This paper defines alcoholism, the nature of the disease, the effect on the individual and his family and the social and economic cost of it for our nation. It focuses on the specific alcoholic and his history together with the growth of the disease, seeks to pinpoint causes with reference to its early growth in the family of reference and its fruition in the family of procreation, discusses alcoholic life patterns in the marriage relationship and its effects on the children. Medical models, psychological models of Menninger, Blaine and Berne, and Sullivan, and a sociological model are presented, as well as the author's pastoral theological reflections on alcoholism re a Christian concept of person."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133942575792128,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:27:18.278Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:30:31Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:40:22Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"95b1ca81-e6b7-4525-b802-db4d7b8aa052","accessControl_ssim":["3aff8583-d61c-4b12-a084-b7130ee8b77d"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Ministry with the homebound elderly in Our Savior's Church, Mondovi, Wisconsin"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:30:30Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:30:54Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["c73cde62-1671-4391-a41e-4df3889e2fbf"],"hasLease_ssim":["dfdd9070-200a-4d74-a90c-aecb5960ebba"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Douglas E Wingeier"],"year_tesim":["1982"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Ruwal H Freese"],"publisher_tesim":["Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Our Savior's Church (Mondovi, Wis)","Older people","Church work with older people"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This report details ministry in 1976-77 with the elderly homebound members of Our Saviors Church (United Methodist), Mondovi, Wisconsin. The priest as a helping professional is often symbolically given god-like power to heal, help, guide, console, counsel and affirm. This paper analyzes the role of the priest as a professional helper called by God and examines his dealing with stressful, vocational demands. Role expectations must be integrated with capabilities; otherwise, being all things to all people usually leads to stagnation, frustration and apathy, the successive stages of burning out. The emotional demands of risking, reaching out and touching the people of God on a deep interpersonal level can lead to wholeness/holiness, or to destruction. If stress is not dealt with creatively, the body, mind and soul are dis-eased. Especially serious is stress on the heart. However, with creative power one can channel stress to yield an abundant harvest in the vineyard of the Lord. Risks involved in being the servant of servants include dying to self so that the new life of the Resurrection becomes a reality witnessed in word and deed."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134173759537152,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:30:58.752Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:30:30Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:19:11Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"4b6423ed-ddff-438b-87d1-6ab3e4c3f6b3","accessControl_ssim":["bf3b48e3-97b8-40e5-8d73-a318c3d5c50e"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Pastoral care of Hispanic families in the United States: socio-cultural, psychological, and religious considerations"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:30:30Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:20:49Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["f8dfbd35-ebe1-453b-a033-757c11082e08"],"hasLease_ssim":["247cea60-0b9e-4a90-a58a-333c44e914be"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"advisor_tesim":["Henry C Brooks"],"year_tesim":["1982"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Marco A Espinoza"],"publisher_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"subject_tesim":["Economic conditions","Spanish Americans","Mexican Americans","Puerto Ricans","Social conditions","Pastoral theology"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This study of the socio-cultural, psychological, and religious situation of Hispanic families in the United Staes has implications for pastoral care. There are about 9 million Mexican-Americans and 2 million Puerto Ricans in the US. Both Hispanic groups are at the bottom of the socio-economic ladder, and face discrimination, unemployment, poor housing and low educational achievement. Puerto Ricans on the mainland appear to have a higher incidence of mental illness than Mexican-Americans. Mexican-Americans tend to be more acculturated and live in less stressful conditions than Puerto Ricans. There is a high rate of underutilization of mental health services by Hispanics. The shortage of Hispanic-American priests is an obstacle to strong Hispanic leadership in the Roman Catholic Church. Protestant Hispanics are mostly evangelical in theology and conservative in life-style with little involvement in socio-political action. There are almost no pastoral psychology programs to train Hispanic leaders in pastoral counseling and chaplaincy. The church must work toward better socio-economic conditions for Hispanics and develop programs to train Hispanic leadership."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133435154137088,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:19:14.363Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":234,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
