Death comes gradually often taking 10 to 20 years.  Ministering to these patients is a challenge because as speech fails, the patient becomes more frustrated which complicates the relationship to the minister and others.  The longevity of the disease often creates a severe burden for the family as well as the patient physically, emotionally and financially. Cultural problems have effected a weakened prayer-life for many Reformed Christians. Sociological conditions have led some to a loss of faith and lack of trust.  For others, role changes in the family have led to a breakdown in familial religious responsibility.  Prayer in the Reformed tradition is then looked at from biblical, historical and theological perspectives.  Biblically, prayer is communion with God. Prayer is traced historically from early Jewish worship to the Puritans.  Theologically, the paper looks at the transcendent and immanent attributes of God, the effect of sin, justification and sanctification on relationships, and how the church community influences our approach to God through prayer. To revitalize prayer-life, various methods of listening, meditating, keeping a journal, and healing are proposed and explained.  The strengths and weaknesses of the Reformed tradition are defined. Emphasis is placed on the 'ministry of presence' in the work of the chaplain.  'Ministry of presence' is a legitimate aspect of the chaplaincy not only because it prepares for other forms of ministry but because of what such presence itself does. The project includes a description and analysis of the results of a three-stage effort to deal creatively with the training by which chaplains are integrated into the Army. This experiment incorporates the concept of 'ministry of presence' into the chaplains' training program. A research questionnaire was devised and administered to 97 male alcoholics and/or drug addicts. This project focused on eight areas: general background, early childhood, chemical usage, heterosexuality, masturbation, homosexuality, sexual difficulties, and general questions.  The study demonstrates that adult males who are alcoholics and drug addicts have significant sexual dysfunction both when using chemicals and also during periods of sobriety.
