The theoretical work of Ivan Boszormenyi-Nagy concerning dialectic, loyalty and justice is evaluated and criticized.  He studies the family system from an existential perspective and integrates obligations to and responsibility for intergenerational loyalty commitments.  Case presentations are used to show how one pastoral therapist used IFTT from a Christian perspective.  Recognizing loyalty as the backbone of a family system, the pastoral counselor defines a family's understanding of loyalty obligations and constructs a framework which encourages psychological, emotional, and spiritual loyalty commitments to surface and be integrated in a healthy, relational context.  Understanding justice can help a pastoral counselor pray for a family's unresolved injustices. This project addresses these challenges by proposing a three-to-four session model of premarital counseling.  The model was designed over seven years of parish ministry.  Twenty-three clergy in seven dioceses were questioned concerning methods of premarital counseling and the need for a model.  The model also incorporates findings from a survey of literature on: dealing with marriage, divorce and remarriage; the experiences of separation, divorce and remarriage, and reconstituting families; premarital counseling; and Episcopal canon law on holy matrimony. It presents the need and theological foundations for such a ministry.  Questionnaires and interviews were used to gather data from clergy, remarrieds and about to be remarrieds.  Study of literature and audio resources on remarriage were also pursued.  Seminars can be designed to help prepare couples for remarriage.  The study discusses design, implementation and evaluation of a 'planning on remarriage' seminar and addresses barriers for doing so in a conservative evangelical setting. Appropriate training in this dimension of ministry will help them to relate better to parishioners on a variety of levels, to mainain objectivity as counselors and to avoid pitfalls in their counseling ministry.  One forum where pastoral counselng can be very helpful is the Roman Catholic Catechumenate, reinstituted by the Second Vatican Council. This present study describes the manner in which such a program was designed and executed in a local parish. This church's often troubled life has been a remarkable microcosm of wider currents in American church history.  This study traces these currents from 1825-1975 with particular reference to the relationship between 'evangelical faith' and 'social concern'.  Primary documents available are the official records and writings of its ten ministers over 150 years. Personal faith and active social reform characterized many evangelical churches in the 19th century.  The fundamentalist-modernist controversy has characterized the 20th century and continues to hamper the unity and mission of the church. While there are new possibilities for reconciliation between 'personal faith' and 'social gospel' among conservative and liberal Christians, particularly with the emergence of the 'new evangelicals' of the 1970s, some issues, especially biblical understanding and authority, indicate continued tensions. The intensive group experience model emerging from the 'human potential movement' is evaluated from a biblical and theological perspective.  Two particular models developed within a Christian context are assessed for insights and potential.  Data are gathered from literature and participation in models.  An educational model, Family Cluster, is evaluated in the context of questions raised by the therapeutic design. The study develops a theology and theory on marriage, traces the historical and literary formulation of premarital counseling as a practice, reports the results of a questionnaire survey of premarital counseling practices among clergy in the two Adventist conferences, and develops an alternative premarital counseling program which enables clergy to save time and enhance their premarriage counseling experiences.  The study of 100 clergy in two Adventist conferences investigated their programs, backgrounds, churches and materials characteristic of premarital counseling. Data from questionnaires returned by the clergy indicated: 1) 94.0 percent believe in premarital counseling; 2) only 18.0 percent felt comfortable doing premarital counseling; 3) the majority felt uncertain about the actual effectiveness of premarital counseling; 4) 84.0 percent require premarital counseling; but 5) 87.0 percent said they did not have a specific structured counseling program. Where the people as a whole and the pastor have shared significant mutual trust, such 'corporate' trust begins to weaken while the personal ties, or 'one to one' trust between the pastor and individual parishioners grows deeper.  What do these paradoxical-seeming changes mean?  nearly eighty such pastorates were studied to learn how the pastor can maintain strong corporate trust as well as the individual trust that results in good pastoral care. Workshop materials were predicated on theological, psychological and communication principles.  Couples, attending workshops in four churches, prepared communication goals on a graded scale to achieve in three months. Sixteen of twenty-one couples returned the scales to me.  I processed and interpreted the results.
