It examines: 1) how a pastor views the counselee(s); 2) the difference between pastoral care, pastoral counseling and non-Christian therapy; and 3) what is distinctively 'pastoral' about pastoral counseling in the parish and elsewhere.  Part 2 of the paper deals with four actual counseling cases.  In each case the unique theoretical aspects of pastoral counseling are applied practically. These cases deal with: 1) depression, 2) family systems, 3) exhibitionism, 4) schizoid personality and family systems. A theoretical chapter argues that religious experiences are unique and qualitatively different from natural experiences without, on the opposite extreme, becoming irrelevant magical supernatural events.  Research, by test and interview, explored the relationship between religious experience and service.  Results: People from mainline churches claimed religious experiences that associate with natural reality and extend service that is humanistic and personal in orientation. A questionnaire was sent to United Methodist chaplains who had retired between the years 1975-1980 with a high level of response.  The instrument sought information about the past life pattern of the respondent and whether the person desired to return to ministry and was successful. Questions were raised concerning difficulties experienced in placement and in the role the Commission of Chaplains and Related Ministries of the UMC played in the process. That contribution, centered on the resurrection event, is enhanced when it is presented in forms that are understandable to ethnic people in non-Christian traditions who live in close proximity to one another. Indigenization is proposed as a viable redevelopment strategy.  It seeks to condition congregational life to cultural contexts in the application of principles of self-government, self-propagation and self-support. Assumptions drawn from historical data, interviews and studies of existing congregations were tested on a research model, Detroit Presbytery's redevelopment to two defunct congregations, resulting in the launching of Trinity Community Presbyterian Church. It is designed to be an instrument for supervisor-therapist communication concerning the investigation, enrichment, and remedial treatment of marital relations.  A model is presented that is organized in terms of three sets of relationships in the supervision process of: 1) supervisor-therapist, 2) therapist-client, and 3) supervisor:therapist::therapist:client.  The study reviews professional identity and the scope and function of pastoral care. The program was evaluated by means of a pre- and post-test family life survey.  The survey was designed to measure knowledge, attitudes, and skills for family living. Percentages of correct answers on the pre- and post-tests were determined and compared. A nine month period of time provided ample opportunity for relationships to develop based on the tradition of the church and with specific people in the local congregation.
