The purpose of this study is to address the issue of the pastor’s role as a participant in decisions affecting the funeral event. It is my intention and profound hope that this project will enable my pastoral colleagues and me to better minister to the bereaved at the occasion of a funeral by exercising more creative choices which might be available to us in such events. As the number of urban counseling centers increases, there is a need for trained, culturally sensitive pastoral psychotherapists to be able to treat competently low-income black American clients who will increasingly frequent these centers. This study will identify the low-income black American, highlight the special problems the low-income black American client brings to the pastoral psychotherapist, and suggest effective means for doing pastoral psychotherapy with these
