The thesis of this dissertation is that parishioners' image of the ideal is a major factor. Adams probes the cognitive, affective and behavioral components of church decision making by examining the biblical and doctrinal approach of the UPC, interviewing pastor nominating committees which selected ministers during the period, and questioning all the heads of staff themselves to compile a profile of the persons who were chosen. The author concludes that the intern experienced andragogical learning about the issues studied; that lay persons can handle the method; that mathetic information about an intern's behavior-in-ministry can be gathered and displayed to aid the process; that further field-testing seems warranted by the findings. To better understand the interaction between churches, synagogues and the aging network, data were gathered from clergy and elderly in one community. Of 48 churches, 34 (71 percent) clergy responded to face-to-face interviews. 16 Of 18 social service agencies also agreed to be interviewed. Of the many kinds of programs provided to the elderly by churches, visitation is the most common: all 34 visited congregants in hospitals and all but 2 of 34, when homebound. Among social service agencies 6 of 16 provide direct visitation, meals or other services to the homebound. While concern for the homebound in this community is clear, even though a local coordinating counseling exists to coordinate services, we found no coordination of services between the churches and the agencies. Among a purposive sample of 71 elderly 35 (48 turn to clergy first at a time of need, with 19 (26 percent) turning to physicians and 13 (18 turning to social workers."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["2ed862c2-32c4-448b-95c8-4a58c3d74b5b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133855862751233,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:25:55.581Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T22:03:10Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:32:35Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"0e9b50c9-c774-4ba7-9257-2d713df27339","accessControl_ssim":["b4913f49-3a84-48bd-a70c-7c9ea34ecb2d"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Marriage, divorce and remarriage: a guide for pastors, sessions and churches"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T22:03:08Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:31:59Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["09110471-47b8-45a4-8358-93198d079995"],"hasLease_ssim":["a0a76be0-80cc-4c51-85a8-72c637f0f0a5"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["George W Kinght"],"year_tesim":["1984"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Stephen B Kellough"],"publisher_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Reformed Church--Doctrines","Marriage--Biblical teaching","Remarriage","Interfaith marriage","Divorce"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This guide is primarily an exegetical and theological study done from a reformed and evangelical perspective. It challenges assumptions and establishes a theological and psychological rationale for church loyalty, setting forth a detailed, systematic definition which delineates three degrees of church loyalty, identified as eros (self-gratification), philia (approval of community), and agape (sacrificial) types of loyalty, and sharply distinguishing the absence of loyalty from disloyalty which is viewed as destructive and unresponsive. Behavioral models of unloyalty and the stresses that test their loyalty are delineated, including so-called 'burnout.' loyalty development in the biblical communities and the researches of church motivational authorities are combined into a suggested program to elicit loyalty and an experiment involving the application of this treatment in a local church setting is reported with the result that preventive measures show promise of developing loyalty and fortifying church members against the pressures that test it."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799718492520316928,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:35:03.078Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T22:02:41Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:14:49Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"244bf272-fd7f-4efe-b955-82e65d8aee81","accessControl_ssim":["bc8ddf9e-d70d-4aa5-ab58-35bf370bc3e6"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Psychotherapy and Zen Buddhism in Christian ministry"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T22:02:40Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:12:15Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["e8c825eb-5f98-47ff-80ba-6b18dc608258"],"hasLease_ssim":["2065ca3f-3d98-40cd-93fd-7468e95e6a28"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"advisor_tesim":["Henry C Brooks"],"year_tesim":["1984"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Robert Edward Kennedy"],"publisher_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"subject_tesim":["Zen (Buddhist school)","Church work","Psychotherapy"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["No abstract"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133160352776192,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:14:52.291Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T22:02:41Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:12:14Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"7ada73e1-e5b0-4870-a659-0c08cf324253","accessControl_ssim":["aa303488-d7fb-491c-99c2-f8e2d74e6a44"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Congregational and military personnel network for the Episcopal Church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T22:02:39Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:45:15Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["c8531d25-6240-4963-afb5-2f6cb18e6ce6"],"hasLease_ssim":["09e5ee72-1fd6-4043-89bb-2fcd763f5e66"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Pittsburgh Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Ulrich W Mauser","Marjorie Suchocki"],"year_tesim":["1984"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Donald W Beers"],"keyword_tesim":["Congregations, Anglican"],"publisher_tesim":["Pittsburgh Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Armed Forces","Episcopal Church","Congregations","Bible.
