He concludes that functional substitutes are biblical and should be used to help the converts avoid syncretism.  The author did primary research into the beliefs and practices of the Dyaks in West Kalimantan, Indonesia.  He developed a manual of functional substitutes for use by rice farmers. Members are to recognize biblically qualified men raised up by God to be elders and deacons.  Elders remain as long as qualified, while deacons remain if qualified and needed. The goal was to foster personal growth in seminarians as they prepared for pastoral ministry.  In the project, the first division documents how this experiment in personal growth was carried out.  Section A carefully outlines the methodology used and describes in detail the composition of the class of students.  Section B reveals how tensions arose in the group which ultimately forced modifications to the course. Section C highlights the innovations used to foster further fellowship and growth.  Section D explains and gives the results of the various testing used to discern growth in the students.  These tests indicated clearly that the students did grow academically, professionally, and personally as a result of the project. A statement of biblical Christian belief is given after each statement of Hindu belief.  This project was accomplished by first writing a summary based on a literature review.  The summary was then discussed with two educated lay Hindus and one Hindu spiritual leader. Suggestions and criticisms were used to redraft the summary.
