Those indicating 'very strong' sense of belonging identified several motivating factors: strong worship and educational life; theological diversity; personal initiative toward getting involved; the feeling that the Christian faith--as expressed in this congregation--makes a significant difference in one's life; and that each member has some opportunity to affect the congregation's life. A curriculum was developed and a four-phase process of recruitment was developed and followed in order to test the thesis in one local United Methodist church.  Foster parents were recruited and began to function.  The theology undergirding the project, including a discussion of the church-state issue, is included. This was a study of twenty people who were divided into two groups.  The one group received eight lessons concerning process thought; the second group did not receive the lessons.  All twenty persons kept daily journals to record insights and feelings about God, self, and the world; all participants prayed daily for fifteen minutes during a period of eight weeks. A survey questionnaire addressing the issue of pastoral presence was administered personally to 101 randomly chosen ministers of the Western Pennsylvania United Methodist Conference.  Twenty-two of this group were given further opportunity of an oral response in an open interview.  Positive and negative trait patterns were identified by these pastors.
