The project examined theological presuppositions, descriptions of each enrichment program, evaluations of the results of each program, and many of the sources for marriage enrichment.  The theological presuppositions came out of the examination of selected scriptures, and how Baptists have hisorically interpreted those in their statements of faith.  The evaluation compared the scores of a pre-session and post-session 'marital communication inventory'.  These scores indicated areas of improvement in communication. Spiritual guidance is presented wtihin the context of contemporary spirituality, showing how it differs from pastoral counseling. The focus is an orientation for volunteers and a Bible camp program field tested over a 10-year period. Authors who had written on this subject in the past five years were consulted. The thesis also examined definitions and directions through a questionnaire mailed out to five hundred protestant churches representing three Lutheran 'evangelical' denominations.  The thesis was tested through the efforts of a lay ministry team.  This group arrived at a definition of lay ministry and implemented their ministry through several case studies which are presented. Commentaries for each Sunday's set of readings for the three-year cycle were written.  Three periods of in-ministry testing of a congregation demonstrated  that the majority of congregational respondents benefitted from emphasis on the Old Testament message, and that lay and peer advisory group respondents grew in their appreciation of that message and its integration in their faith-life. He used lay and clergy advisory groups, interviews with knowledgeable persons, perusal of major works in the field, and personal experience to develop and test these guidelines and practices based upon them. The beginning point of the study is the psychological and spiritual suffering of the alienated psyche in the archetypal wasteland, a painful condition in which the individual feels separated and alienated from his or her own unconscious depths, from other people in human community, and from a seemingly destructive and unavailable God.  This archetypal experience is viewed as the a priori condition for the healing of psyche and soul, a transformation which occurs through the establishment of a redeeming link with an infinite source of wisdom, guidance and blessing called, variously, the self-archetype or the greater personality in psychological language, or the mysterium tremendum or wholly other in theological language.
