Using the concept of 'levels of truth' from Anne Wilson Schaef's book, Women's Reality, as the organizational backbone, three levels of relationships are addressed.  Level one outlines the congruent interface between psychotherapy and spiritual direction where emotional needs and the spiritual search are one in the same.  Level two outlines the incongruent areas where both disciplines stand in a relationship of tension.  Four areas are explored: awakened consciousness, ego-negation, self-knowledge, and discernment.  The bridge building chapter integrates the theory of Winnicott, Rizzuto, and Meissner with the thinking of Needleman, Edwards and Jones.  Level three is a synthesis of both disciplines. The themes throughout this paper are suffering, death, salvation, redemption, and resurrection.  These are followed historically in the Old and New Testaments.  Suffering in the OT is thought of variously as a punishment by God, an an educative process, as suffering caused by evil, etc.  In the NT these views of suffering are modified in the light of Jesus' suffering, death and resurrection.  Resurrection to life in the spirit completes the victory over suffering, sin, and death.  The third and fourth chapters deal with these themes from a psychological perspective using the ideas of Jung and Frankl.  Frankl's emphasis is the importance of finding meaning in suffering; Jung emphasizes the creative use of suffering. Chapter five is a theological perspective on the pain of God and our human dilemma.  Shared suffering is important, and God shares our suffering. The method of research is historical and begins with a survey of some literature regarding the origins of consciousness from the unconscious.  A study of the human personality according to C G Jung is presented to provide a framework for describing the dynamics of the human personality, conscious and unconscious.  A chapter on dreams, symbols and religious experience locates their origins in the unconscious and studies their significance for personal and spiritual development.  A brief history of western Christian spirituality is surveyed, indicating a reverence for the unconscious as a source of spiritual growth and personal integration. The spiritual journey foster s a symbolic level of consciousness in order to attach a symbolic meaning to religion, scripture, church, dogma and ritual. The plan was to design a practicum in such a way as to allow the participants to discover God in their lives; to be in touch with and express their own spirituality. The author's belief is that parents of adolescents are often those who are most in need of pastoral care in the local church but are often over-looked.  Parents of adolescents face not only the issue of de-parenting their adolescent but the concomitant issues that are a part of middle age. This training enabled these pastors to use plannaging in their personal and professional life.
