While much discussion has taken place, insufficient theological reflection has occurred.  In this project, the author encourages renewed reflection upon such issues as the mode and meaning of baptism, open or inclusive membership, re-baptism and baptismal unity.  He pays particular attention to the World Council of Churches document, Baptism, Eucharist, and Ministry.  The project provides biblical and historical research on Christian baptism, as well as current ecumenical dialogue. Contemporary baptismal theology and practice among Disciples are revealed by means of a survey consisting of both laity and clergy responses. A study of the literature revealed that this had not been done to date.  The conclusion was that a wide chasm separates the two systems.  It is pointed out that further dialogue between Christianity and other religions may bridge this gap.  Helpful features common to both belief systems are explored. Along with one-to-one contact there are new fellowship opportunities designed to low for closer relationships to develop within small groups. Three such theological presuppositions are isolated.  The five novels were read and discussed by a group of laypersons who had difficulty in perceiving Updike's theological intent.  The study concludes that while the works of Updike help provide meaning for preaching, they are no panacea for the preaching task.
