The thesis summarizes work done in foundations of gestalt therapy, a pastoral care model presented by Clebsch and Jaekle (healing, sustaining, guiding, reconciling), and primary chemical dependency treatment (utilizing the Minnesota Model).  The author then presents case illustrations dealing with an individual stuck in past history, a  family with communication difficulties, a couple trapped by the past, a grief experience, and an individual seeking a sense of safety. He concludes that both the worship practices and teaching authority of the church are important elements in determining doctrine. Study was undertaken of works on symbol and metaphor at the library and with professors. Thirty cancer patients were interviewed using questionnaires: one gathered personal background and medical information and the other assessed spiritual well-being.  The findings indicated that religious beliefs were significant.  Daily prayer was associated with spiritual well-being, but religious affiliation and church attendance were not.
