The objective is to assist the adult student in approaching John Wesley's contribution to spiritual growth and help him utilize the methods and means offered.  An adult Free Methodist Sunday school class served as the field setting for a pretest inventory, three lessons, posttest inventory, and interview.  Strengths and needs from the pretest determined the lessons' focuses. The objective of the project is to implement church growth concepts to help achieve spiritual and numerical growth of the churches of the district.  This study of church growth concepts revealed that new churches represent the best approach for reaching and assimilating people not actively involved in any congregation. The project developed a system of devotion that gives priority to relationships through spiritual formation activities and disciplines. A pilot study involving church board members was designed.  A spiritual formation inventory was administered to gain the subjects self-perceptions of their spiritual formation needs.  Based upon the inventory results, a series of educational exercises was developed and taught to the board members. The board members indicated in their postinstruction responses increased desire and intention to pursue systematic spiritual development. A tri-fold methodology was employed: 1) conceptual-analysis of biblical and church growth principles relating to church planting; 2) demographic-a comparative demographic study of four target cities in light of the conceptual conclusions and opinions of zone pastors; and 3) attitudinal-an attitudinal survey conducted among southern tier area Nazarenes to measure beliefs and attitudes concerning the conceptual and demographic issues raised.  The project concludes with an extensive proposal for the Upstate New York District Nazarene Advisory Board. The thesis was that people can be taught and trained how to pray and as a result experience growth in Christ.  The methodology focused first on the pastor: his study of prayer, practice of prayer, recruiting, teaching, and training prayer group leaders. He scripted prayer concerts and reflected on them.  He also gave inventories to the participants. The primary purpose was accomplished through research in records and publications preserved in the denominational archives. The subsequent purpose was accomplished in a seminar presentation to the department. Two principles from Wesley himself form the basic structure.  The first is an adaptation of his outline for conducting family worship.
