To become a spiritual director there must be a movement from 'knowing' the history of the discipline to becoming part of the on-going integrative process of living in the mystery of the discipline. This paper examines this integrative process by investigating historical perspectives on growth in the spiritual life cura animarum, defining spiritual direction as an integrative process; and using insights from Jungian psychology in developing not only principles of pastoral counseling, but principles for spiritual direction. After covering the foundations of the development and organization of cognitive, emotional and linguistic meaning systems for the individual, the author reinterprets psychodynamic concepts as metaphors which can be used in therapy to help the client describe his or her internal mechanisms and process. The use of metaphors to elicit change in meaning systems is portrayed, particularly in terms of developing a sense of self-love in the client. The final two chapters portray ways in which myths as process metaphors can be used to bring about therapeutic change, and then a framework in which Christian pastoral psychotherapists might be able to embrace what is vital about Christianity without sacrificing what is vital about being alive."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133739433066496,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:24:04.546Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T00:26:22Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:27:57Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"bb52c82c-66ae-47a7-8504-35212176aaed","accessControl_ssim":["30682b82-d390-4ad6-ab2a-8bc2ee4415d2"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Liberation of the self-mission of the church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T00:26:22Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:31:25Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["5bed583a-bf8a-41ce-817c-dac63d96c630"],"hasLease_ssim":["a16b89cf-0b50-45c3-b554-d2f36fc21831"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"advisor_tesim":["Henry C Brooks"],"year_tesim":["1989"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Dean P Mattson"],"publisher_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"subject_tesim":["Catholic Church","Church--Teaching office","Love--Religious aspects"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The project asserts that humankind is created for a loving relationship with God. It describes how alcoholism is a shared disease, affecting not only the identified alcoholics but also the systems to which they belong. Using family systems theory, the study suggests parallels between family and church. It shows that just as a family in the process of maintaining stability incorporates dysfunctional behavior, so too does the church. The church, like the family, accommodates and creates the atmosphere where alcoholism among clergy continues and grows."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133085794828288,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:13:41.187Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T00:25:54Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:29:23Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"d56f9acc-7f33-45cd-a141-734421875896","accessControl_ssim":["85c83713-093b-4509-8b58-d17748d8e6de"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The pastoral provision: a study of the psychological experience of transition in mission from one church denomination to another"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T00:25:53Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:13:59Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["623f0b16-3b12-4998-9d4b-0141d510368c"],"hasLease_ssim":["8ce31f7c-4ef8-4bbf-b9d2-446e6f424892"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"advisor_tesim":["Henry C Brooks"],"year_tesim":["1989"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Richard A Bondi"],"publisher_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"subject_tesim":["Clergy","Ordination--Catholic Church","Episcopal Church"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The project was designed to discover the emotional ramifications of the process whereby formerly Episcopalian priests may be ordained as Catholic priests. Its origin reflects a dual involvement in peace and justice work and adult education, and its scope has resulted in a model for education for peace and justice ministry. The process employed in delineating the model is akin to that of an action/reflection mode of learning. It is rooted in longstanding peace and justice action, and is expressive of diverse experience in adult education. Through a synthesis of research and reflection, action and analysis, the dissertation seeks to systematize theological and educational resources into a coherent model of education for peace and justice ministry. The model has emerged through a dialogical and creative process of discussion, experimentation, implementation, reflection and systemization."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133855764185088,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:25:55.488Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":331,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
