The study reviews literature from biblical times to the present on the purpose, theological and biblical bases, practice, and methods of pastoral visitation.  Disciples' theology on pastoral visitation was reviewed, and a survey of Disciples ministers in Kansas was made.  A strategy for pastoral visitation in the pastors' studies was developed in notebook form and field-tested. Supervision facilitates the integration of academic and experiential learning.  The historic and contemporary use of supervision as a modality in ministerial, social work, and teacher education was examined.  Experienced ministers and recent ministerial graduates were interviewed regarding their experiences of being supervised during preordination education. The program is broken into three distict components: 1) preaching; 2) teaching; and 3) testing.  The project requires a complete month of active participation by the fellowship.  The report presents as well a foundation from which to approach spiritual gifts.  Fundamentally, the report expresses a broader definition of spiritual gifts so as to include all of God's gifts.  These gifts are expressed in terms of creation, humanity, salvation, and history.  In order to achieve the above, the report also includes a section that details a particular understanding of the gifts given in history. A training program was developed based on the findings. This program was tested and retested. The research focused on how ten patients responded to the process of a chaplain obtaining a spiritual life review, and then compared their physical, cognitive, and affective responses to twenty patients in two control groups.  All thirty patients' responses were measured at the beginning and the conclusion of the study. The concern for service carries out the practices of the Society of Friends (Quakers).  The question studied was the effects of requiring community service.  Pre and post test measures were taken using instruments to measure self-esteem, social and personal responsibility.  Interview and group discussion were used to gather data.  The students in this study showed a significant increase in social and personal responsibility.  Self-esteem did not change significantly.
