The data obtained, which includes response from physicians to a write-up summarizing and assessing patients' history and a questionnaire patients returned following their discharge, indicated that sharing their history was a positive experience for ten of the twelve patients interviewed. This goal was pursued through a series of seven sermons on the key theological images, followed by weekly celebration of the Lord's Supper, coupled with seven adult classes and four sessions with children. The biblical reference for the project came from Jeremiah 36.  The participants in the program were lay persons from St Luke's Episcopal Church, Mobile, Alabama.  They committed themselves to read selected passages from Holy Scripture, to reflect upon the same through contemplation and to write journal entries related to the experience.  Two questionnaires provided empirical data on the project, which lasted 30 days. This project created objectives, recruited adults as leaders, and developed a youth program.  The pastor took a leadership role, but encouraged leadership from adults and students alike. A model for understanding the clergy divorce process emerged with recommendations for pastoral care and counseling.  The data confirms that clergy with children experience fourteen predictable salient events and clergy without children experience twelve salient events in the divorce process.  This modified ethnographic study demonstrates that some of these events are more painful than others. Participants were given the opportunity to discover their spiritual gifts by use of the 'Wagner Modified Houts Questionnaire'. In chapter one he describes the church, using both subjective and objective indicators ro renewal.  In chapter two he gives a theological foundation based on Jesus as servant.  In chapter three he presents a design for renewal that includes a sermon series, education class series, and a retreat.  Chapter four is an evaluation. Results were mixed.  To an extent the church developed a spirit of risk and a vision of community service. In dialogical worship the individual encounters God and one's neighbor and shares his or her being with God and ones neighbor. When this worship occurs, the encounter becomes 'the communion of the saints'.  The  thesis is affirmed by examining worship from phenomenological, biblical, historical and theological points of view.  The study examines a particular congregation in which special attention was paid to what phenomenologists call the 'dialogical region'. Area surveys reveal more needs than churches are able to satisfy.  This project demonstrates ways to recognize resources and provides methods to move from problem oriented to innovative planning.
