A sound biblical and historical base for the devotional program was constructed by using the literary research presented in chapter 2. Chapter 3 outlines adapted procedures from content analysis used to evaluate the social research data received from the twenty Masterlife members taking part in the project.  The common devotional needs revealed in pretest efforts guided the focus for the new devotional curriculum.  The literary research in chapter 2 was used to address these discovered devotional needs. The project was designed to contribute to the effectiveness of the ministry of the participating pastors by creating a caring, supportive community of peers.  Chapters two and three examined the biblical and historical foundations.  The biblical models of covenant and community were the primary foci.  Sketches of several leading theologians were presented in order to understand how support systems in spiritual growth have functioned effectively at significant times in the history of the Christian church.  Chapter four described the preparation for a implementation of the program.  Data was gatherd through questionnaires and interviews. The group design and various options for continuing support in spiritual growth were presented. A questionnaire administered in 1987 exposed specific weaknesses.  The author developed a syllabus of instruction and conducted seminars in seven cities, concentrating particularly on basic principles of teaching and learning, on educational methods and media, and on the integration of the total teaching program of a church. The Hudson Index of self-esteem was used as a pretest and posttest for two groups.  Groups A was exposed to the course which included practical instruction in hospital visitation.  Group B was exposed only to the pretest and posttest.  Fifty percent of the Group A participants experienced a signficant increase in their self-esteem level.
