The project was developed through a series of eight two-hour sessions which were designed to provide lay counselors with insight, information, and techniques from theology, psychology, and sociology.  To determine the effectiveness of such a program several methods of evaluation were used, including a pretest and posttest which were evaluated by a two-tailed t-test for correlated groups. Two control groups of 10 people and a training group of 15 were enlisted to participate in the training process.  The object of the project was to move the training group away from the low control group and toward the high control group.  The training strategy used a three pronged approach: students participate in weekly lectures; homework assignments; and experience with a variety of ongoing ministries. The historical research conducted to develop this paper included review of the documents of the Episcopal Church, the Diocese of Mississippi, the parish, the state of Mississippi, and the town of Yazoo City.  Interviews, both oral and written, were conducted with residents, former residents, and clergy in order to learn additional stories and to aid in the interpretation of other information.  The purpose of the project was to provide a permanent collection of stories about the history of God's people in the Episcopal Church in Yazoo County. The congregation needed to address this issue and the issue of continuing fit of the congregation's vision and the pastor's vision of ministry. A study focused on the congregation's identity by utilizing the narrative of the congregation.  The format of the study was a series of six sessions involving elders and committed members of the church.  It was hypothesized that reflecting on the church's journey of faith in its history could cause the congregation to ponder positive attributes and in turn bolster the congregation's self-esteem, hope, and energy, and contribute to a more responsible and effective expression of the congregation's faith commitments. The basis for a twentieth-century hermeneutic is explored through Barth's 'Epistle to the Romans,' in which he posits that the hermeneutical key to Paul's letter is 'krisis.'  Included is an exploration of Charles Gerkin's works on hermeneutics in pastoral care with theological emphasis.  Crises stories from six persons and a biblical story are analyzed in group session by the methods obtained from Gerkin. A questionnaire was sent out to a large group of orthodox rabbinical courts and the data derived from this survey was used to determine the current practices. A program was then proposed, based on the author's personal knowledge and professional experience, to enhance the present procedure with a variety of experiences which followed the genuine traditions, yet were meaningful to the conversion candidate.
