Using original sources, the author shows how a liberal 'vision,' above and beyond the 'modernism' of the times, contributed to an unprecedented level of church growth, individual enthusiasm, and social and political influence. A significant factor was the large number of women ministers serving in Iowa in positions of power. After 1900, eastern denominational leaders and other factors discouraged women and undermined rural midwestern churches; by 1915, few remained."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799716310629744640,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:00:22.264Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T01:18:10Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:14:15Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"3931ae06-81f4-4e86-bf9a-355a6f9ce467","accessControl_ssim":["d2991dbe-db60-4592-bb87-bfd6da66e925"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The establishment of the journey of faith for a Southern Baptist Convention congregation"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T01:18:09Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:47:16Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["bb376d25-3bbe-479d-843b-9899b882594c"],"hasLease_ssim":["8b4025e0-faf5-404b-aae5-d8bf09a021b4"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["University of the South"],"advisor_tesim":["Robert Davis Hughes"],"year_tesim":["1991"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Bruce E Sloan"],"publisher_tesim":["University of the South School of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["Southern Baptist Convention","Sanctification","Travel--Religious aspects","Baptists","Spiritual life--Christianity"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The scope of this project is to engage a Southern Baptist congregation in a significant confrontation with their doctrine of sanctification through the imagery of a spiritual journey. Initiating the project was a survey of a congregation's perception of faith. Results of the survey reflected the need of Baptists to address the place of experience after the 'born again' event, a lack of discipline, and the influence others have on an individual's spiritual growth. At the end of the project a survey was taken that showed Southern Baptists can develop an understanding of spirituality as journey. Such understanding took concrete form when twelve people undertook a structured project involving group study, journaling, and direct involvement with the homeless and their advocates. A proposal calling for church involvement with the homeless evolved. The strength of the project/study arose out of one constant: exploring the relationship between spirituality and servanthood. The thesis tested was whether literature can be used more effectively than traditional Bible study to change attitudes of class participants. Three groups were tested: a class reading Will D Campbell's The Glad River, a Bible study group looking at biblical themes of community, and another class serving as a control group. An identical questionnaire was administered before and after the studies, and the responses were compared and evaluated.
