Meaningful, well thought-out liturgical events are extremely effective in developing Christian identity, an identity that can prevail against the other words and other stories that would coopt and destroy the unique identity of the church. Significant research which provided the foundation for the reorganization process included: a demographic analysis of Hebron; the composition of a constitution and by-laws; and an analysis of state and federal welfare programs available to residents of eastern Connecticut. The action component takes the ninetieth anniversary year of the Haddam Neck Covenant Church (1988) as a means of viewing heritage and intersecting it with the current situation. Techniques used were the pastor's home visits and family dialogue which invited family members to write and share notes on topics they agreed to discuss.  The pastor made one home visit before the ceremony of confirmation and the second visit afterwards.  The information gleaned from these conversations shed light on the inner life of the families, their systems, traditions, hurts and hopes. The goal of the project was to demonstrate a model of followup which would provide believers with nurture and support.  Two towns were targeted for a structured followup program in which new converts were discipled by a trained worker.  The towns indicated enough potential for improvement to warrant employment of a full-time followup worker. The multi-faceted approach included: the design and use of a semantic differential test (before and after) to determine the shifts in attitude; the cognitive goals of sermons, books, and discussions; the first-hand exposure to WCCC and a successful Maryland application; and the official vote of the congregation to shift to this model of ministry.  MCC was not sufficiently dissatisfied with the status quo to motivate them to make the large-scale changes necessary to adapt this model. Field testing within the Northern California Conference of the United Church of Christ is chronicled and critiqued through six case studies. The project data, derived from two groups, each meeting for six sessions, supports the thesis that individuals are able to fashion and enact meaningful rituals expressive of shared experience and beliefs.
