Turretin, Edwards, and Pannenberg demonstrate the inherent fluidity within form intrinsic to Reformed spirituality. In response to the growing AIDS crisis the governor of Minnesota convened state leaders to develop a comprehensive statewide strategy.  This process provided a case study for exploring: (1) the intent of the religious community in regard to an emerging social issue with significant public policy implications; and (2) the impact of the religious community on those who are responsible for developing and implementing public policy.  Policy makers were virtually unaware of the efforts of the religious community, yet most of its positions resonated with the values of policy makers. Using the perspective of the ministry studies of the United Methodist Church, the author analyzes pertinent data from scripture, church history and ecumenical agreements as well as social factors of time periods when the various forms of the diaconate (deacon, monastic orders, deaconess, diaconal minister) were strong, and concludes that the office of deacon is important as a representative ministry and embodiment of Christ's call to serve. The purpose of this study is to show that a consistent and systematic way to approach bioethical dilemmas has evolved in the last quarter century.  The study approaches the discussion of limiting medical treatment from medical, legal, and theological perspectives. Specifically, bioethical dilemmas involving persons with developmental disabilities residing in a state residential facility in California are explored.  The project portion of the study includes a handbook for use with families in considering options regarding limiting medical treatment.
