The experiment represented an attempt to move a mainline local church toward a more activist mission orientation in relation to its social and economic context. It explores the thesis that pastoral leadership which aims at engaging church leaders in theological reflection about their identity and context will lead to an experience of revitalization.  The experiment in interpretive guidance failed to achieve significant change in the mission orientation of this church toward its community. The purpose of this research project, therefore, is to provide a thorough analysis of the system of categories engaged in the preparation of a subject approach to indexing the JITC.  These categories include inquiry into the 'theologies of liberation,' 'indexing principles,' 'descriptors,' and 'computer-assisted indexing.' This dissertation traces the tradition of hymns and hymnals, biblically and historically, then, in its project, proposes new indices for any hymnal, to aid in bringing the tradition of hymns to life in the local church.  The project is based on The Presbyterian Hymnal (1990).  A chronology of both texts and tunes is offered, with a historical narrative index describing the historical and theological movements in hymnody. Exilic prophets spoke to the grief of the Exile and speak to today's rural churches in exile.  Rural churches can find new identity through grief counseling techniques.  The project applied grief counseling methods to eight declining rural churches.  The project demonstrates that grief is part of rural churches and grief counseling leads to new identity and renewed vitality. Books by Marie Fortune and Peter Rutter describe the interpersonal dynamics between abuser and victim.  The author proposes a number of pastoral skills needed for the healing of such a congregation. The church belongs to Jesus Christ and therefore all functions of the church must be built on a foundation rooted in spiritual disciplines of faith.  The four phases of the project included a congregation council leadership training program, a retreat on spirituality for congregational leaders, a seminar to train leaders in prayer disciplines, and a program of small group studies on spiritual issues. The guide also may be used in advance of death to provide survivors information about choices and preferences.  Case studies of twenty-five people who, within the last three years, were primary survivors responsible for making arrangements were the principal data sources.
