Ministers as well as laity may well wait for an individual to approach them with a grief-related situation before they give thought to what will be said or done in order to help the bereaved. In that 'on the spot' form of ministry, the minister does not present his/her best pastoral side and the care-receiver may walk away feeling as though their needs have not been addressed adequately. This dissertation is designed as a practical resource to assist both clergy and laity in the development of an intentional grief ministry within their respective congregational settings. It takes two forms: that of evaluation of the particular church's current ministry to those experiencing grief as well as instruction in the establishment of an intentional grief ministry. Emphasis is placed on the care provider's ability to develop a meaningful relationship with the care receiver."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128611308175360,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:02:33.985Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T04:23:19Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:23:44Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"99338fb3-8680-4112-86de-78462de12e63","accessControl_ssim":["e26be028-3bc7-458b-8711-8ed5487f8edb"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Narrative preaching as a catalyst for Christian community"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T04:23:18Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:36:50Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["607899f7-c3ef-4bd8-98aa-e30d5dd234bc"],"hasLease_ssim":["397dc17f-b9af-49bf-997d-415f10cd0f78"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"advisor_tesim":["Frederick A Niedner"],"year_tesim":["1995"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Charles P Larson"],"publisher_tesim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"subject_tesim":["Narrative preaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The thesis proposes that narrative preaching can be a catalyst for creating and nurturing Christian community in a diverse congregation set within an individualistic society. After enlistment, leaders and members participated in pre-tests and post-tests to determine learning levels. The seminar was led by the author and was intended to lead each participant to be able to identify their leadership style. Motivational principles were studied and each participant identified how their leadership style affected the motivational level of their followers. Research was conducted on leadership styles that were Christian in basic orientation. While a plethora of secular leadership styles were studied, the concern was for Christian leaders. Motivational principles were based upon Maslow's hierarchy of needs and how Christian leaders can evaluate the needs of followers. The study revealed that a 'democratic' or 'body leader' leadership style was most effective in aiding the motivational level of followers. A balance of 'task' and 'relationship' was also best demonstrated in the 'body leader' style."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["dacf5c07-78c8-4937-a01a-26cd044f9625"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135283507363840,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:48:37.090Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T04:23:18Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:29:47Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"65eccaf8-ce8c-4442-a64a-a8ebeda5dbe9","accessControl_ssim":["4dd902b7-7a95-4f10-af71-009e2f627c59"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Finding a way to forgive: reclaiming power and wholeness"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T04:23:17Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:06:53Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["b0fc1776-e6f3-4f0b-b504-60d3c7b1655a"],"hasLease_ssim":["d24bb24d-a396-46b0-8a8b-f514fa8647ea"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities"],"advisor_tesim":["Christine M Smith"],"year_tesim":["1995"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Jeffrey B Palmer"],"publisher_tesim":["United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities"],"subject_tesim":["Forgiveness"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["A critical and constructive look at forgiveness using the method developed by Whitehead and Whitehead enhances the pastoral care giver's ability to lead grievously wronged clients in reclaiming their power and wholeness. These two theories are built around presuppositions similar to a theological anthropology in which the Old Testament 'image of God' and the New Testament 'Body of Christ' are central. Those theories can enable the preacher to conduct a double hermeneutic. The interpretation of the biblical text and the use of behavioral science in the interpretation of the congregation can both assist the preacher preparing meaningful sermons.
