Effective spiritual direction can be done in the local church through the sermon.  Preaching as spiritual direction differs significantly from preaching as pastoral care.  The author presents research leading to a definition of preaching as spiritual direction.  In addition, the author presents a pragmatic application of the theory to crafting sermons which have spiritual direction as the principal aim. The project included recruiting lay leaders, training them through a model group process, and then allowing them to recruit and lead their own small groups.  The lay-led small groups were evaluated by means of a questionnaire, and the results indicate that significant spiritual growth occurred. The church does not consistently and devotedly follow the Lord.  Revival is thus a corrective step on God's part. The renewal conditions of 2 Chr 7:14--humility, prayer, seeking God, and repentance can be applied to Christians today.  The concept of revival was studied in a small group setting.  The conditions of revival in 2 Chr 7:14 were examined in a series of sermons.  The study and messages resulted in a clearer perspective on the need for and nature of revival. The fields are ripe for harvest but also infested with scientific, secular, cultic and occultic problems.  There are also competing saviours, different gospels, syncretistic approach to religions and perplexing theological controversies regarding signs and wonders and holistic ministry.  Hence, it is important to heed the call of David L Larsen that the 'evangelical in-roads are at risk and must be protected.'  To do this, an evangelist must have a clear biblical perspective of the call and nature of his commitment.  The changing world view of his own multi-religious mosaic against the Christian world view must be understood, in order to effect a total transformation in experience, and its expression in the cultural and social context of the converted. Also of importance is the virility and vitality of character and spiritual aspect of the evangelist.
