This work is theological and community-developmental in scope.  It describes and critiques parish interaction with a target group of single parents in public housing.  Recurring use of four key research questions and survey data is central.  A rediscovery of parish identity in relation to poor people was catalysed and informed.  Adult Christian education was more focused to local community issues and linked intentionally with social analysis. The author created and led a six-week study with a rural and urban group using Thomas Groome and Walter Wink's paradigm.  The experience was significant for most participants.  Intimacy and joy grew over the study period.  Women may have difficulty articulating how they sensed the presence of God, but will struggle to do so. Citing evidence which suggests there is significant confusion about the doctrine of holiness, the author explores the impact of the dominant use of an argument form to shape holiness sermons.  Citing history, scripture and theology, the author proposes that greater use of narrative and image forms will strengthen holiness preaching, and better respect the dynamic theology of the Holiness movement. The specific objective was to develop and implement a philosophy that would function effectively among congregants who are predisposed to either a more traditional (in this case, Nazarene) worship style or a more contemporary worship style. Chapter 5 presents results of questionnaires and interviews. Two chronic problems are dysfunctionality of the church and marginalization of immigrants.  Chapter 6 proposes the contextual christological model. If a cultural gap is part of the problem, measures can be taken to help pastors develop greater cultural sensitivity. Surveys investigated differences between perceptions of pastors and members in an Appalachian conference of Seventh-Day Adventists.  Percentages, t-tests for independent means, and correlation coefficients examined the relationship between perceptions regarding Appalachian culture of church members and pastors at the .05 significance level.  All, but one, of the cultural clusters indicates cultural gaps. The reserve chaplain faces both philosophical and functional role expectations that come from a variety of sources: the military, the civilian congregation served by the chaplain, the chaplain's endorsing agency, and the ever-present realization that if mobilized he or she would have to leave his/her civilian congregation to be with and minister to Reserve soldiers.  A research questionnaire was developed by the author to identify tensions resulting from the dual role ministry. This project sought present attitudes on this problem through 213 pastor and 313 layperson questionnaires sent to churches within the Cape Cod Council, and random samples of the Massachusetts Conference of the United Church of Christ and Hyannis Federated Church.  Seminars were held for the respondents.
