'Being there' emerges as a phrase used by men, women, and children to describe the task of fathering, in contrast to the parental 'otherness' that characterizes unhealthy fathering practices. Four general landscapes--cognition, affect, communication, and action--present roadblocks to intimacy and opportunities for 'being there' for a father with his children. In this prayerful community of fellow sufferers participants study selected passages of Scripture, share one another's spiritual journeys, and examine passages from Christian writers who reflect spiritually and theologically on issues of pain. In a qualitative study of 12 Episcopal/Anglican clergy couples in the United States and Canada, the project finds that couple ministry is an authentic call of God for transformation of the church, but the personal cost to these couples is high. Appalachia's earliest settlers bring with them a Scotch-Irish culture and historic anti-Anglican biases. Tennessee's first two bishops promote a High Church understanding of ecclesiology. These two distinct and often diametrically opposed cultural and religious forms remain at odds even into the late twentieth century.
