Min. project explored a number of issues and concepts about pastoral leadership in starting new churches that affect the growth and health of the new church.  It also tested a particular 'Profile of an Organizing Pastor' to see if it could predict which ministers would be most successful in starting new churches.  The research was a survey of the first pastors of non-racial/ethnic Presbyterian churches organized between 1982-1992. Transforming laypersons into leaders required seeking, encouraging, equipping, and deploying them in ministry. Spiritual formation and spiritual gifts were the primary focus. Spiritual gifts inventories were used to determine the giftedness of laity. Lectures were used in the Wesleyan class meeting format, expressing the Wesleyan spirit, supported by tools helpful in accomplishing the desired result. The spiritual gifts inventory and two evaluation questionnaires were used. The project was an evaluation study in quasi-experimental mode utilizing a pretest-posttest design with no comparison group.  The results of the research do reflect a general receptivity to the four-fold pattern but there was little indication for substantiating this pattern as a common ground for worship in the Church of the Nazarene. The fifteen-week seminar taught the concepts of leadership foundations, community and performance to over twenty selected church leaders. A control group of church leaders did not attend the seminar. An evaluation instrument, validated by a panel of ministry leaders was utilized among both the control group and the study group in a pre-test / post-test design. Results indicated that the leaders who participated in the study improved their scores on the post-test evaluations by a statistically significant margin, not only in the overall leadership evaluation, but also within each of the three leadership attribute categories studied. No improvement in scores was found among the control group. The context was the Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Midway, Kentucky. Two sermons and two workshops were developed to enhance the inclusiveness of new and existing members into the working ministry of the congregation.
