This thesis project will propose a theory of emotional bonding based on the work of selected contemporary psychologists, and will apply that theory by means of a series of preaching tools. Finally, the theory will be tested by means of a workshop developed for deaconate candidates. Chapters One and Two addressed the theory of emotion and the understanding of the emotional bonding process. Chapters Three and Four define and explain how metaphor, illustration, storytelling, self-disclosure, and humor work individually and collectively to create emotional bonding between preacher and congregation. These two chapters explore the value and relevancy of these methods to the homiletic process. In Chapter Five the elements discussed in Chapters One-Four are integrated within the context of the deacons' workshop. This chapter demonstrates how the techniques available, as well as the emotional bonding theory, can assist the preacher in creating a homily, which can appeal to the cognitive and emotional needs of the listener."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["416f1c5f-a1c7-4596-b214-83b6abadee9c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129934487355392,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:23:35.867Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:10:04Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:39:30Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"92edb1a3-b218-474b-8309-911f4995c44e","accessControl_ssim":["eeeaecb1-2e73-441b-8f8c-18f9cd3664f1"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Enhancing the Spirit-filled life of a Korean immigrant congregation"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:10:04Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:25:54Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["a1a1aac8-1e9c-4ef6-ac58-014d36d45edf"],"hasLease_ssim":["ca70f689-21a4-4422-8814-d2f0c86f6a9c"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Northern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Charles Cosgrove"],"year_tesim":["2000"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Myung-Hun John Oh"],"publisher_tesim":["Northern Baptist Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Korean Americans","Holy Spirit"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis presents the concept of the Spirit-filled life as understood by a Korean American immigrant church. It has investigated the biblical meaning, theological, and significance of baptism. The biblical meaning of baptism should be clearly explained before baptism is administered. In the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Kenya, pastors need help of trained church elders and lay persons in preparing candidates for baptism."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andrews University"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4b1d9df2-25d6-46f6-a889-1871c277d61c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135401678733312,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:50:29.787Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:09:34Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:30:53Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e5351e93-4ae5-44df-8058-fa6de32c52a5","accessControl_ssim":["c28d270d-c7dd-4478-b660-7a586c154323"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The self-image of the Lutheran preacher and its influence on law/gospel proclamation"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:09:33Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:41:23Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["3f79ca70-d257-486d-818a-3ad1e253b431"],"hasLease_ssim":["c5fd887e-c777-4eba-a575-6e2970b7c2c2"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Richard A Peddicord"],"year_tesim":["2000"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["David P Mulder"],"publisher_tesim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["Lutheran preaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project investigates the extent to which the goal of Lutheran preaching is further realized when the preacher adopts the self-image of representing Christ the bridegroom to the church, Christ's bride. The goal of Lutheran preaching is defined as letting hearers encounter Christ so that they are strengthened for faith and discipleship. Four pastors took part in one-day preaching workshop in which the importance of the preacher's self-image was introduced and explained. Each pastor agreed to preach a sermon series in which self-image was at the forefront of his mind.
