Recognizing the faith needs of families with young children, five congregations in Naples, Florida, formed a consortium to develop and implement a collaboratively designed project, utilizing pre- and post-testing to determine attitudinal changes regarding preschool ministry as an avenue to community evangelism. It was designed to help congregations and their communities determine their unique ministry callings. Discovery process methods included Bible study, interviews, individual and group assessments, observer-monitor sheets and a list of possible health ministry ideas. The four tested congregations exhibited greater interest in faith and health. These congregations determined the most prevalent congregational diseases, stressors, and some previously unknown health issues. Documentation included observations of members at prayer and personal testimonies about answers to prayers. Willing residents in a designated nursing home and volunteers from local congregations met individually as partners and in small group gatherings within the institution in order to provide spiritual companionship and spiritual well being for the residents. Storytelling based on the Christian scriptures, affirmed one's value, enlightened one's understanding of God's presence in daily life, and fostered friendships. In response to this perceived need, three lay ministry teams were commissioned, and ongoing programs of support, education and nurture were developed. The model uses a threefold, concurrent methodology that envisions acting into new ways of thinking by transforming 1) preaching into innovative dialogue, 2) entrepreneurship into collaboration, and 3) ministry-for-the-neighborhood into ministry-with-the-neighborhood. Test findings suggest that traditional congregations can be significantly transformed by relational, small group dynamics.
