The thesis is informed by The New Homiletic and makes use of an aspect of family systems theory called leadership through self-differentiation and emotional connection to explain the transformation of the author as a preacher and a leader. Many small church pastors are frustrated as they witness the decline of the small church. However, many of these pastors continue using preaching models that seem insufficient to address the issues in the small church, primarily the issue of conflict resistance. This thesis proposes that an alternative preaching model is needed in the small church, particularly one with conflict and complexity built into the preaching model, for the purpose of challenging the small church to embrace conflict so that it might be transformed. This is important to the field of homiletics because it seeks to demonstrate a narrative conflictual model of preaching in an institution that regularly resists conflict. The thesis is supported by theory primarily provided by Lyle Schaller and Eugene Lowry. The church planting project was successful with forty-nine of the fifty-one churches planted surviving. Though each sponsoring church handled their relationship with their new church plant differently, each gave financially to support the new church. This project is a modified content analysis of literature used by the Southern Baptist Convention. Questions about the literature were asked in order to gauge the strengths, weaknesses and common themes. The answers provided data that was beneficial in determining how the denomination trains churches in sponsoring new work. As a result seventeen principles were identified. Evangelism, administration, finances, worship, Bible teaching, and leadership are all inter-related elements involved in making disciples of Jesus Christ. The twelve churches in Bogota started from a Bible study of ten people and use the name Aposento Alto, which means Upper Room. Biblical study and literature survey identified the nature, development, and practice of spiritual authority in Asia. Empirical study utilized leadership Emergence Theory (Clinton) to interpret qualitative ethnographic data and quantitative questionnaire data from researcher developed assessment tools. Three findings emerged: spiritual authority has both universal aspects and culturally distinct expressions; identity formation is central in spiritual authority development; and instructor 'fathering' of students had life changing impact. Principles and insights of the action science model developed by Argyris and Schon (1974) and the ideas of Wenger on informal 'communities of practice' (1998) undergird three ministry-based explorations. A  Practicum group, a Roman Catholic group and an Elementary School Faculty were tested for evidence of a community of practice and any personal or communal transformations.
