Further, this thesis posits that spiritual care professionals (e.g. chaplains) need to move from strictly ancillary support toward the practice of integrative medicine. The thesis begins with an historical perspective which outlines the gradual bifurcation between spirituality and healthcare in the Western world. This split was occasioned principally by the European Church's growing emphasis on the salvation of souls, and by science's growing dominion over the physical and natural worlds. This section ends with evidence of an emerging reintegration of spirituality and healthcare. With the understanding that such a reintegration requires an inclusive definition of spirituality, the thesis posits a definition of spirituality unrelated directly to religion and religious practices. A discussion follows utilizing the development of Old Testament spirituality to understand the relationship between medical crisis and spiritual crisis. This is followed by an extensive presentation of the efforts of scientific researchers to demonstrate the relationship between spirituality/religiosity and physical health. The last substantive chapter of this thesis is devoted to the writer's efforts as a professional healthcare chaplain to help make spiritual care an integral part of healthcare. The results of his practice of integrative medicine are outlined in the appendices."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130745081692160,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:36:28.910Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:10:36Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:14:17Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"c5c24567-4773-46dc-8cf3-f80a37af0322","accessControl_ssim":["eb6b00d5-2003-4db2-87a4-7ee1a3282c3f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Partnership and leadership: women, authority and the practice of ministry"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:10:36Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:48:47Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["c90950a5-b92c-4e63-bbf3-0bbbe8784772"],"hasLease_ssim":["30a768f2-992b-429a-b961-56acbcc9d469"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Anna Carter Florence"],"year_tesim":["2002"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Emily J Anderson"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Clergy","Clergy--Office","Women clergy","Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)","Partnership--Religious aspects--Christianity","Authority--Religious aspects"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project explores issues of authority, which are foundational to the practice of ministry. In order to critically examine this problem attention is first given to the issue of identity formation, the role it plays in the development of human beings and how unhealthy psychological and psychosocial development plays a major role in leading some young people to act out violent or otherwise anti-social behavior(s). Posited here is that Erik Erikson provides a planned theory of behavior that sheds great light on the role of identity formation, prosocial behavior both as an individual and as an individual who is part of a reference group. Racial identity, racial socialization and racial salience must be considered in any approach designed to assist Black American youth relative to the issue of youth crime and violence. Theological and ethical analyses are brought to bear on the problem being examined. The position taken is that the problem of youth violence and crime is, perhaps, best addressed from within a religious/theological framework of meaning. Moreover, that the Black Church and African-American moral tradition provides a model for developing ethical leaders. Such a model can provide a useful framework for working with young people in order to reduce violence, criminal and other anti-social behaviors among them. Walter Earl Fluker has done extensive research in the area of developing ethical leaders from the Black Church and African Americans moral tradition. This work is based on his exhaustive study of Howard Thurman and Martin Luther King, Jr. The model is based on four concepts; agapeic love (the overarching concept), character, civility and community. Based on these concepts a program model with these four foci as the foundational principles is described. The program is designed to work with 8-14 year old inner-city, socio-economically deprived youth. An evaluation of project outcomes follows. A postscript chapter details the potential role of the Black Church and Black clergy in working with these, our most challenged young folk."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799715410794250240,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T01:46:04.115Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:10:08Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:55:37Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"4c8ec016-7abb-4de8-82c0-bcc98f91a5fa","accessControl_ssim":["35501ca8-8981-4340-8017-95684ee704d2"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Unmasking a unique model of ministry for the dormitory community of Greater Portmore"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:10:07Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:22:55Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["447bd825-6f08-4e4c-a62b-f5e2e7b7edf7"],"hasLease_ssim":["faed8674-de85-4918-bd14-f2fe5e79fc1a"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Charles E Raynal"],"year_tesim":["2002"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Alvin R Bailey"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Greater Portmore (St Catherine, Jamaica)--Religion","Suburban churches"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The community of Greater Portmore is a newly developed residential community located in St. Catherine, Jamaica. A one-day event was offered to clergy stressing that with divine providence honor and shame can mobilize persons in conflict to healthy resolution rather than destructive separation.
