Generally, Koreans consider gambling as a social evil, but temptation was unmistakable there.  The causes of people who gamble were investigated and plans to win the victims back were established. Three years later, she was pregnant at age nineteen in her first year at the University of Toronto.  This thesis addresses the issue of premarital sex among teenagers in North America.  It will research theological resources in the Bible concerning premarital sex.  It will provide a comparison of cultural and social analyses.  The thesis will discuss the theological and ethical concerns in the debate on premarital intercourse for teenagers.  Problems of premarital sex remain in our changing society, such as pregnancy, venereal diseases (VD) and sexually transmitted diseases (STD), and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). Although young people have knowledge of contraception and protection against diseases acquired during sexual intercourse, they still need to be concerned about sexual morality in our society.  The thesis will imphasize Christian education as a strategy of intervention including physical and medical intervention, and theological and ethical intervention to help teenagers who are involved in premarital sex. Korean women have lived with social values and principles that are grounded in a dualistic patriarchy and hierarchal system.  These values and principles hinder the spirituality of liberation in Korean society and church.  Christian tradition and the Bible present the authentic spirituality that Jesus Christ shows us from his life.  This authentic and holistic spirituality and new perspective of Christian doctrines propose ways for new vision in the Korean church.  The final chapter suggests spiritual direction as a pastoral response to help Korean Christian women. Learning and understanding the cultural values, tacit assumptions, and norms of these churches and towns can take years, and the process itself may cause unnecessary pain to the families of these ministers.  With proper training and continued support, however, some of the difficulties associated with building a ministry in rural and small churches can be mitigated.  One effective training program is Rural Social Science Education (RSSE).  RSSE and the materials provided in the training can prepare first-time pastors for the difficulties associated with a new ministry and provide theological models for ministering in these first time calls. Through the theological reflections of six pastors who serve in rural and small churches, this project, informed by RSSE training and materials, examines important strategies for building a rewarding life and ministry.  Until recently, these strategies may have been overlooked or underemphasized in traditional seminary training.  Through a case-study approach, this project examines the processes pastors use to interpret their professional and personal experiences theologically.  Some pastors use a daily journal.  Others read articles and new books with theological perspectives that are different from their own.  Some pastors become involved with pastors' groups in order to reflect collaboratively on common experiences. Targeted congregations exhibit symptoms of decline that include: isolation from another and from surrounding neighborhoods; a loss of connection to our middle governing body; a fragmented organizational style; and a disconnection from our roots in Reformed faith. The loss of connection is also directly related to a loss of spiritual grounding. Three congregations have been selected from the targeted group. Hoped-for results are: restored connections with other congregations, with their own surrounding neighborhoods, and with the middle governing body.  We hope congregations will recover their identity as Reformed disciples and experience spiritual growth through a process of transformation. Expected impediments include: obsolete assumptions that linger from a modern age; a loss of identity and purpose; isolation from the context of a larger church body; fear of differences; and grief.  My intervention is an educational approach borrowed from Peter Senge's Learning Organizations..  Over a period of eight months 15 congregations are grouped into Pastoral Teams (pastors and congregational members).  The Pastoral Teams are joined by Support Teams (members of the presbytery and contract staff).  They work together to create ministry plans. The method involves a series of classes taught by the presbytery staff team. The ministry plans and interviews by the presbytery Council provide the basis for an evaluation. The project studies the form and movement of lament psalms and offers five theological insights. It traces the development of the Presbyterian rite in the United States and examines its liturgical shape and theology.  It examines the various texts of the rite and assesses the extent to which they provide opportunity of lament. The images of God are discussed in light of the early history of this movement.  Traditional criticism of this movement finds it superficial and a means of control used by threatened overlords. Therefore, lay people lacked confidence in teaching it and members were hesitant to receive teaching from someone not seminary trained.  A twelve-session teacher training seminar was conducted over four consecutive Sundays.  Five Filipino ethnic Chinese Episcopalian adults were trained and tested.  The responses of ten local church members to the trainees' teaching were also tested. The five trainees taught before and after the twelve-session seminar.
