Chapter 1 introduces the goals for the project and the context of the church in which the project was implemented.  Chapter 2 establishes the biblical and theological foundation for the project.  Chapter 3 examines intercessory prayer in light of the history of revivals and awakenings.  Chapter 4 describes the project's methodology and the teaching sessions of the seminar, which was conducted in the church.  Chapter 5 provides an evaluation of the project and its effectiveness in the church. Div. degree from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary from 1975-2000 (inclusive). The project had three main goals: 1) to determine the occupations of women graduates as of March 2002; 2) to determine how many graduates had left, or did not begin, professional ministry; 3) to understand and document the factors surrounding the graduates' decisions to leave or not begin ministry. Results indicated that 32% of subjects were not in active ministry. Chapter 1 explains the causes of missionary attrition and proposes the resolutions through spiritual formation. Chapter 2 defines and describes the historical origin of spiritual formation beginning with the period of the Desert fathers and continuing through the modern day work of Richard J. Foster who have contributed to the understanding of the formation of spirituality and may continue to contribute in preventing missionary attrition. Chapter 3 examines missionaries' spiritual, psychological and physical statuses as well as different missionary generations that are distinct either in contribution to missions or to missionary attrition. Surveys have been conducted throughout seminaries and missions organizations in an effort to prevent and resolve issues of missionary attrition. Chapter 4 addresses issues of missionary attrition through spiritual formation in praxis during seminary and missions training tenure. To test this thesis, a series of twelve biblical sermons on discipleship was preached at Crowfield Baptist Church, Goose Creek, South Carolina. A focus group of 16 persons was administered a pretest and posttest to determine the effectiveness of the preaching series in increasing listeners' knowledge of biblical teachings on discipleship, and upon their personal state of discipleship. Expository preaching, interviews, and personal improvement plans form the basis of analysis of the focus group member's prayer lives in the areas of personal prayer life, family prayer life, and corporate prayer life.  Chapter 1 serves as an introduction to the overall thesis of the project for the church.  Special attention is given to contextual an demographic composition of the church along with the goals of the project.  Chapter 2 provides the biblical and theological foundation for approaching the project.  Selections from the Old and New Testaments serve as examples for various kinds of prayer in the Bible.  The theological section examines the role that prayer played in the lives of Calvin and Wesley. Chapter 3 examines the pragmatic or experiential role that prayer has played in the lives of historical and contemporary people of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.  Chapter 4 explains the process used in implementing this project.  Attention was given to sermon summaries, pre and post sermon series questionnaires, and the purpose of the personal improvement plan.  Chapter 5 focuses on analysis and evaluation of data gathered from the research instruments. In addition, the author drew upon effective, contextual models developed and implemented in pastoral ministry. Chapter 1 included an overview of Harpeth Community Church, along with the rationale, limitations, and a statement of purpose of the project.  Chapter 2 examined the theological basis for 'holistic Christian conversion' and featured a detailed look at biblical prayer, the Word of God for conversion purposes, and some of the needs presented by unbelievers before their conversion.  Chapter 3 detailed the process of conversion, and included several popular and new scales for measuring the spiritual condition of the unbeliever.  Several popular conversion programs were examined in detail. Chapter 4 introduced materials developed for the course, a meeting format, pre-training for Christians who join the class as helpters, and an overview of the actual course material.  Chapter 5 concluded the project with an analysis of the program, the volunteers that participated, and the conversion of spiritual seekers.  Other topics included the eventual improvement of the course for broader usage and the furtherance of the study in the future.  The project was developed as an attempt to provide a better alternative to the Alpha course for broad use within the Restoration Movement.
