A startling number folks, after hearing hundreds of biblical sermons, still think they are saved by 'being good people.' Many Christians who sing 'Amazing Grace' with gusto, live functionally 'graceless' lives. Few people think grace when they hear the word church. This project aims to help preachers and Bible teachers who long to communicate grace in a way that transforms grace novices into a community of grace connoisseurs. This thesis suggest pastors begin with expository preaching. By basing each message on the central idea in each biblical text, a pastor fastens himself and his congregation to the message of grace. Next it suggests pastors make shalom, an Old Testament word describing the 'kingdom of God,' the target of every sermon. This single, unifying target provides the cohesive framework that forms years of sermons into one grace-full whole. The thesis then encourages pastors to understand their congregation's worldview, a way of answering what and how people think. A pastor who identifies and understands what his congregation believes about the alternatives to grace promoted in culture, can make his message clearer. Likewise, when a pastor understands how his congregation receives information he can communicate his message in a method clearest to their pattern of hearing. American culture has become so image-saturated that its main language is the language of images. In such a world, the rich variety of biblical images provides the optimal introduction and understanding of grace. Often preachers focus their sermons on changing a specific behavior of their audience. This thesis suggests that pastors can best build a culture of grace by aiming to change a congregation's worldview. Under the direction of the Holy Spirit a pastor can implement these priorities and create a community of renewal, which will empower the church's restoration. Research has demonstrated that few new graduates feel adequately prepared to step into the full-time preaching role required of a senior pastor.  Consequently, many new graduates become members of pastoral staffs in order to gain the experience and the skills needed to become a senior pastor.  Staff pastors who aspire to become senior pastors need further equipping and experience in homiletics.  Senior pastors have a unique opportunity to share the experience and expertise acquired through years of pulpit ministry. That experience and expertise may be shared through mentoring staff pastors in homiletics. Mentoring staff pastors in homiletics provides the fundamental principles of homiletics and a structured plan needed to equip an experienced senior pastor to successfully mentor a member of his pastoral staff in homiletics.  The manual is divided into three major parts, Mentoring in sermon preparation, Mentoring in sermon delivery, and Mentoring in sermon evaluation.  The manual is designed to provide individualized instruction for the staff members' specific needs. The author's premise is that expository preaching without notes is the most effective way to communicate God's word in a media culture.  Although we live in a visual culture, the author believes that the oral transmission of God's word is still a viable means of communicating the Good News.  Whereas the content of our message cannot and must not change, the method with which we communicate the message can and should change.  The particular method that will effectively communicate God's word in a media culture is preaching expository sermons without notes.  This thesis is comprised of five chapters.  In chapter one the author will state the case for expository preachingwithout notes. Chapter two will examine the role of preaching and preachers from a biblical perspective through the use of theological reflection.  Chapter three presents a focused literature review on the material currently available on expository preaching without notes.  Chapter four includes a syllabus and outlines for teaching a course on expository preaching without notes. The training occurred during seven ninety-minute sessions. The program involved the participants in teaching/training sessions, group discussions, and a neighborhood tour. At the completion of the project, the project director acquired an increased knowledge of inner-city families' needs.
