The majority of Seventh-day Adventist churches in Texas are in a district consisting of two or three churches that share one pastor. The district pastor often can not be in every church each week, creating a need for lay leaders to preach. This D.Min. project is divided into two sections. The first three weeks of this project will equip the local pastor to become a mentor to lay leaders in order to help them develop skills in Bible-based preaching. During the next six weeks, each pastor will lead in a workshop that is designed to assist one or both lay leaders in their development and delivery of a Bible-based, Christ-centered sermon. Bremem First United Methodist Church was recently severely conflicted, but is resolving its conflict and growing.  The challenge ahead is to internalize and institutionalize new forms of relating to each other and become fully a church that makes decisions in a collegial style. The interventions designed to bring this ideal, came to life from a model emphasizing adaptation and shared learning.  A four-month sermon series and an accompanying Bible study emphasized the power of remembering.  Other interventions include a revival using former pastors who remembered the church's spiritual journey during their pastorates.  A naming of the new building designed to claim the best of the church's past and to repent of it's failings. The paper describes the history and nature of narrative, and explores the relationship of narrative to the Psalms. After a general discussion of the Psalms and the rise of narrative preaching, this paper examines nine sample psalms--22, 23, 42-43, 51, 57, 73, 79, 136, and 137, to see how story elements are present in, around and through the text. While our senior population is growing faster than any other age group, our general population has reached a point of nearly zero growth.  Our seniors will soon outnumber our children. Thus we are on a social collision course of epic proportions with no unifying catalyst in sight.  This paper is an appeal for the evangelical church to be this catalyst. We have not yet assumed that position. They desire a friendly, faith filled community that has an affirming and welcoming pastoral staff. The project methodology uses exploratory questions for the self-administered questionnaire, focus groups and personal interviews. The data analysis of the variables resulted in the following conclusions: 96% of the returnees actively search for a parish; they want a pastor who preaches and prays well; they want to be involved in ministry both within and beyond the parish. The foundation of the case for integration was developed theologically, psychologically, and sociologically toward the purpose of a systemic understanding of theory and culture. This theoretical review of published literature addressed the conflict between the various theological, psychological, and sociological philosophical presuppositions. The theory was developed and applied utilizing the presupposition of God as creator of relationship. The Holy Spirit as the dynamic to convict of sin and empower behavioral change and the importance of forgiveness and repentance in relationships were presented. Parabolic interpretation has changed over the centuries with parables no longer viewed as allegory, but now understood as metaphors with extended meaning. In review of the purpose, Jewish source, nature, and language of parables this project examined how contemporary preachers can use Jesus' parables to communicate the message of God's Kingdom.
