One was a six-week interactive course; the other was an intensive one-day workshop.  Though there were some differences, both proved effective.  Seventeen volunteers participated and final assessments indicated increased levels of awareness and understanding.  Leadership ideas are suggested throughout, as well as an easily understood list of spiritual gifts, plus extensive bibliography. The training strategies utilize Joyce's training model, which includes: demonstration, simulated practice, simulated environments, small groups, technology, and individual instruction. Three research protocols were developed in a hospital setting. Approval by the hospital institutional review board was obtained, and the studies were implemented. Different populations and approaches were selected to illustrate that quantitative research for spiritual interventions can be implemented throughout the continuum of cancer treatment. Data has been obtained from two of the studies. She preached often on the subject, featuring stories of transformation in life through forgiving. The author's theory is that there is a way to combine teaching and narrative sermon forms so as to teach, while creating a context to enhance retention of learning. To test the validity of this thesis, I preached sermons on hope before different audiences gathered to celebrate different occasions. Some of the people were teary-eyed, a few felt energized, and several faces were radiant--responses indicating that a redemptive transformation took place in peoples' lives. The author assumes that the dynamics inherent in narrative preaching is instrumental in bringing about these responses that can generate hope. The research method employed was a qualitative examination that primarily utilized the focus group method.  The author identified four summary lessons from the research.  There is a considerable need among Southern Baptist churches in Illinois for clergy evaluation processes.  There are successful feedback models that look very different.  A lay-involved process is stronger because it engages the opinions of laity and encourages teamwork.
