It argues that such a change is possible through intensive guided meditations and group discussions over a thirty-day period.  It demonstrates that such change is lasting and supports the affirmation that such a core-value change can affect the ministry of the whole congregation. The results indicated that environmental values are not emphasized or integrated with religious values. The thesis was field-tested by two groups in two separate churches.  Each group followed the theological basis and the guidelines that were recommended for building and implementing a vision that was to lead to a new ministry within each church. A new ministry was born within each church.  The process and the experience of the process brought forth a positive and renewing effect upon the participants and spread beyond them. Using Groome's method of practical theology, 'Shared Christian Praxis,' the author conducted a case study in a Chicago parish, meeting with adults at a separate location while their children took part in the catechesis. The church has grown rapidly in the past four years. Many of the people added to the church have come from completely secular backgrounds or Christian traditions other than evangelical. These new members must be trained in order to retain them. The plan of ministry will be for the writer to recruit a team of eight to ten mentors. These mentors will be trained for a period of four weeks. In the implementation phase, the mentors will meet weekly with new members for discussion of the previous Sunday morning message as well as some additional Bible study. An evaluation will be performed at every stage of the process. The mentors will evaluate each training session. Both mentors and new members will evaluate each message and mentoring session. The thesis suggests that if United Methodists, in particular, can understand the differing ways they hold the Bible as authoritative, they will be better able to respect others' beliefs, and be more likely to live visibly the unity about which they read in the Scriptures.  Research on sociology, education, and small group theory are shared. Categories of biblical interpretation based on how different persons hold the Bible as authoritative are presented.
