In doing so, the influence of culture, both past and present, is considered. The church, due in part to the influence of modernism, has approached discipleship in a 'consumer driven' fashion. Churches tend to function as religious cafeterias, focusing on the perceived needs and wants of religious consumers. Generally, discipleship in the local church has become haphazard and unintentional in regards to process and outcome. The author offers an approach that is integrated, simple, and biblical. The approach advocates the integration of the three components of intentional teaching, relating, and experiencing in every program of the local church, so as to efficiently promote Christian formation in the lives of believers in a balanced, holistic way. Scripture and the practices of the ancient church support an integrated, holistic approach to Christian formation. The three components of intentional teaching, relating, and are included as central elements of the spiritual maturation process in the Old and New Testaments, as well as in the early church. These components form the core of the integrated strategy. The results of the study enable churches to address two primary issues regarding Christian formation First, from the church's point of view, every program or meeting offered by the church becomes an agent of spiritual growth. Intentional teaching, authentic relationships, and meaningful experiences are employed in different ways in different settings, but the people are purposefully exposed to Christian discipleship at every level of church programming. Second, from the believer's perspective, every person involved in churches using this strategy are able to grow spiritually in an environment that is biblical, balanced, and efficient. Biblical spiritual growth provides a firm foundation for life. A strategy that is balanced enables believers to see the inherent authenticity that Christianity brings to all of life. An efficient strategy enables believers to grow spiritually while being good stewards of their time. The church has a responsibility to enable believers to engage in biblical, balanced spiritual growth, but the church must do so without becoming the center of attention. The believer's focus must remain on God and neighbor so as to worship whole-heartedly and minister faithfully."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129760977387520,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:20:50.394Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:01:50Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:23:56Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"128570a4-a0e9-407f-a683-c2fa554cb010","accessControl_ssim":["d6c85054-129c-479c-bb65-4624617cd6a8"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A study of a framework for marital and family therapy in a pastoral context"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:01:46Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:39:42Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["4b925035-455c-4b6a-9ed1-b41758b53928"],"hasLease_ssim":["c9cb7c35-9775-4a5e-a609-b1bc3604d06a"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Douglas S Walker"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Marriage counseling","Family counseling"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this study is to explore various aspects of marriage and family therapy in a pastoral setting. It looks at the history of Christian witness to Muslims and suggests that relational and contextually sensitive approaches be employed in the presentation of biblical truths. An evangelistic Bible study written to reach literate Afghan Muslims, called The Unfolding Story, serves as the core of the project. It employs a whole Bible approach providing lessons from creation to Pentecost. Lessons progress chronologically through salvation themes, in particular sacrifice motifs from the Old Testament, culminating in the substitutionary death of Christ on the Cross. The problem of sin is especially highlighted as are the attempts to overcome sin by one's own efforts. Throughout the study, storytelling and guided discussion in a one-on-one encounter with an Afghan seeker has been employed. This thesis follows the history of the study's inception and development in preparation for translation into the native tongues of Afghanistan and likeminded Muslim populations."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132325670551552,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:01:36.277Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:01:18Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:12:47Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"131ae5ee-cea3-4bd0-a30c-b4e50bfed69f","accessControl_ssim":["db4cbabd-7297-4582-82a5-545bde686e74"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Improving organizational structure at Brunswick St. Baptist Church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:01:18Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:40:44Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["f3674190-7f85-4a3a-a67e-375083f37ca3"],"hasLease_ssim":["bdddc8bd-d41e-449b-96b3-685af811935d"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"advisor_tesim":["Martin R Crain"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Terry Douglas Atkinson"],"publisher_tesim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School of Trinity International University"],"subject_tesim":["Church polity","Congregations, Baptist","Brunswick Street Baptist Church (Fredericton, NB)"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The author researched organizational structure within the church. It does not look at individual groups but rather the dynamics involved in the overall ministry as it is implemented and run within a local church. The thesis begins with a look at the biblical basis for community and the need to understand its role in small group ministry. Pentecostals have emphasized the personal work of the Holy Spirit but not appreciated the Spirit's role in building community. An overview of contemporary small group models is presented. The organizational factors are derived from Bolman and Deal's work in Reframing Organizations. The four organizational frames or lens are structural, human resource, political, and symbolic. Each area is examined with a view to considering the impact on running a small group ministry. Small groups exist within the context of an entire church system and therefore interact and respond to leadership and what is taking place in the congregation. Six PAOC churches in Ontario were interviewed for this study. There are three main categories of churches: those with small groups, those of small groups and those in a transition phase. The author discovered that each type of church has particular challenges with respect to the organizational factors that are highlighted. Small group ministry can be successful in each context if executive leadership pays attention to the appropriate organizational factors."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132273389600768,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:00:46.418Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:00:46Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:46:40Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"8cae8aee-83b4-4a68-90d4-4b72698b29b2","accessControl_ssim":["a765dc84-8a59-47d6-bff4-612de3178603"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A multiple-case study on the inhibitors and initiators of new growth in plateaued churches"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:00:45Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:15:27Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["3fef1790-f901-4238-b496-7ee53b005c3f"],"hasLease_ssim":["e2e441eb-f071-489e-a345-b96ea5ea8d5f"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"advisor_tesim":["Phillip Sell"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Ken K Klassen"],"publisher_tesim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School of Trinity International University"],"subject_tesim":["Church renewal","Congregations","Church growth"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The research project is designed to ascertain the inhibitors and initiators of new growth for plateaued churches. The conclusion confirms the critical inhibitors and the essential initiators of new growth in a plateaued church."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c654e922-76d0-4427-ac29-e286b7997781"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799719224820629504,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:46:41.454Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:00:34Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:50:03Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"a28f0f15-d1f0-4083-9007-2649130043f0","accessControl_ssim":["84e6862c-8b79-482c-b31c-aea0dde44f23"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Being prepared for life's expected conclusion and helping those you love"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:00:33Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:52:04Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["4fb66d38-2ce9-4941-bdce-e94faef456e3"],"hasLease_ssim":["108c58b9-5ab1-494c-b7f9-66dce164a7c0"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"advisor_tesim":["David L Larsen"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Thomas L Morris"],"publisher_tesim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School of Trinity International University"],"subject_tesim":["Death--Religious aspects--Christianity","Our Savior's Community Church (Palm Springs, Calif)"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this project is to equip adults of the local church with means by which to communicate the Christian message to children and grandchildren in Our Savior's Community Church (a Missouri Synod Lutheran Church in Palm Springs, California). I, though, am ordained in the Evangelical Free Church. Much of the American church dwells in a culture that does not seek to deal squarely with death. The irony is that in this death-denying culture people at one moment deny death, and at the same time 'experience more deaths' through television, movies, and video games (in some of the new video games people seek to kill people at every turn) than any civilization in human history. We seek death in our entertainment, while at the same time we fear death's invasion into our lives. Life forces us to deal with the very thing we dread--death. We seek to place death in the realm of fiction until it comes in our door. In life, death controls the real story line. The American church rarely focuses on death. The church primarily deals with the subject of death at the time of death--the funeral. After the funeral we seek to return to normal life as quickly as possible, though death has removed normalcy forever for the family and friends of the deceased. The result is that most American Christians are ill prepared to face life's expected conclusion--either theirs, or their loved ones. The goal of my project is to help local churches present a Christian theology of death; to provide practical helps in discussing these issues in the church; and to teach church people to cope with death, dying, and grief from the Scriptures (this will be done in four seminars). The four seminars were presented to a local church and evaluated."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c654e922-76d0-4427-ac29-e286b7997781"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799719437727694848,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:50:04.498Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:00:16Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:09:14Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e85d849e-b743-4a00-83a0-a8f0f127a557","accessControl_ssim":["5314aba1-3169-4704-b302-317245775f72"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A search for myth and metanarrative in films popular among college students: an alternative model for Christian evaluation"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:00:16Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:46:58Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["acd9b105-3b9d-40d9-aec2-1b4c99d9699b"],"hasLease_ssim":["4bf69d52-7d6b-42ca-a40a-33a164f04e40"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Gary Parrett"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Jimmy E Gulledge"],"keyword_tesim":["Films--Study and teaching"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Christian sociology","Sire, James W","Evaluation--Methodology","Campbell, Joseph, 1904-1987"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The thesis of this work is that the use of MPAA ratings to evaluate films for Christian youth is inadequate. Next, the mythological and theological frameworks of the films are examined using a Christian modification of mythologist's Joseph Campbell's journey of the hero.
