An incident experienced by the author provoked an examination of the tradition of pilgrimage, which identified a biblical tension between the pilgrimage of freedom in the exodus from Egypt and the cultic pilgrimage to the Temple in Jerusalem. This tension was extrapolated into the life of Jesus of Nazareth, through the history of the western church and up to the present. The two archetypes, represented by tent and Temple, were related one to the other in the image of a mobius strip. A theory of the ritual process was described in three aspects: separation, liminality and aggregation. That paradigm was then applied to identify the ritual components of pilgrimage as departure, communitas and arrival. The work of the ritual elder was considered in the two roles of priest and shaman, which accrue to the ritual leader as personal manifestations of the archetypal tension between liberation and bondage. A parallel was thus developed between the biblical paradigms of freedom and cult, the thresholds of separation and aggregation in ritual, the modes of departure and arrival in pilgrimage and the roles of shaman and priest required of the ritual elder. The research method was a grounded theory study which examined the experience of eight pilgrimage directors through the lens of these paradigms. The results elaborated the process of pilgrimage in preparation, arrival and departure as well as practices adopted by guides in naming and bringing forth the spiritual yearning of pilgrims under their guidance. Trust and safety were juxtaposed with surprise and risk. The work of discernment and the place of ritual in pilgrimage were also explored. The conclusion applied the theory and the findings to the person of the author in the work of parish ministry as well as the vocation of spiritual guidance."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799719873821016064,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:57:00.389Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:27:04Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:17:56Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"c78054a3-0f1f-4ecd-be4d-109ba3638021","accessControl_ssim":["870e830c-0ab9-4666-ad63-8a04416232bd"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Prairie winds \u0026 prairie fires: witnessing to changes in prairie rural communities of faith"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:27:03Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:51:39Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["68b5aa18-d7b1-4794-8c11-dbbdf124bc26"],"hasLease_ssim":["be739460-227f-4bc2-b6c2-dcefebf07317"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["St Andrew's College (Saskatoon, SK)"],"advisor_tesim":["Jean Waters"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"location_tesim":["Manitoba"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Lesley J Fox Calder"],"publisher_tesim":["St. Andrew's College"],"subject_tesim":["Rural churches","Community","Church history","Social change"],"language_tesim":["English"],"alternative_title_tesim":["Prairie winds and prairie fires: witnessing to changes in prairie rural communities of faith"],"abstract_tesim":["In the last 20 years, prairie communities have witnessed many changes including economic, social, and psychological changes. To accomplish this, the project needs to satisfy three requirements from the perspective of process thought. These are logical consistency, empirical applicability and adequateness, and relatedness with Christian identity. The methodology and the theoretical basis for this project are based on the analysis of human experience, the evolution of human consciousness, and the authenticity of intuitions contained in the Bible. The basic idea for this project is the contrast between the past and present consciousness of human beings from an evolutionary perspective. In the Bible, God's love causes God to create, sustain, and redeem the world. Therefore, the existence of human beings and the world is necessarily based on God's love. Two sermons are prepared as examples to apply this understanding of process theology to God in the Bible."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7e2d3cb-fc51-4ba5-a7fd-d43f3f8c150b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132180997472256,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:59:18.306Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:26:04Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:18:00Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"dea58038-5ca2-4295-afa8-448c05744cb7","accessControl_ssim":["674e190b-6a68-487e-9a2b-aee55c3a7c5c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Equipping selected men at Woodridge Baptist Church of Shreveport, LA, to serve as spiritual leaders in the home"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:26:04Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:30:32Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["8e287920-2a4e-4dca-bc3d-7bcf13b8a8c8"],"hasLease_ssim":["87d78d4a-6d62-4b02-914c-1824b9e71117"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Timothy L Searcy"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Michael Wayne Hawkins"],"publisher_tesim":["New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Leadership--Religious aspects--Christianity","Bible.
