What we truly think shapes our decisions and our behavior. Over the last two decades, cognitive scientists have developed a strong body of research to argue that whenever we think about abstract concepts, such as Spiritual growth, we use metaphors to think with. And while metaphors enable us to think about abstractions; they also shape our thinking about those abstractions. Evangelical preachers, by and large, give their listeners performance-based metaphors for thinking about their interactions with God. Sermon applications typically emphasize 'steps to attain X'--where 'X' is the goal for that particular sermon. This activates a ladder or staircase metaphor in their listeners' thinking--a metaphor that emphasizes effort. By understanding how metaphors work, how metaphors shape our thinking, and Jesus' metaphors, Evangelical preachers can develop sermon applications that will assist, rather than hinder, their listener's Spiritual growth."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130732781895680,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:36:17.180Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:05:30Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:40:44Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"5ea8f562-3eb1-4aea-9b66-95255372d553","accessControl_ssim":["a1e3206d-5a7d-43b6-8999-7129dd5fd537"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Preaching that mobilizes a church community to reach an unchurched postmodern community for Christ"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:05:30Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:54:54Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["232c84dd-bcaa-4843-b661-41e72581f275"],"hasLease_ssim":["5ef2aea2-6d7c-40d1-9ba5-5a951ba73909"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Sid Buzzell"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["K Bradley Smith"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Postmodernism","Preaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Looking at the sweeping changes in American culture due to the influence of postmodern thought, this Thesis-Project seeks to help Christian preachers communicate biblical truth in a relevant manner. Rather than fearing these changes, the author welcomes the opportunities preachers have in this age of heightened spiritual sensitivity. The goal of this Project is to help preachers mobilize believers to reach unchurched people. In postmodern America, increasing numbers of people have little to no church background. Believers with a church background often struggle to relate to unchurched friends. The Project contends that the preacher's sermon content and style of delivery can help equip believers to reach unchurched, unsaved friends for Christ. Simpson's message was the Fourfold Gospel, Christ as the Christian's Savior, Sanctifier, Healer and Coming King. The message was taken both to north America and to the world through his denomination, the Christian and Missionary Alliance. The study looks at the five movements that made up the Third Great Awakening and Simpson's contribution to each one. These five movements included evangelism, the Holiness Movement, Healing Movement, Premillennial Movement and urban and worldwide evangelism. Simpson played a unique role in each. The final part of the thesis looks on Simpson's influence today on the present church and on the Christian and Missionary Alliance. As the result of studies and interviews, it shows his message's continuing influence today and the influence in the future. As the church goes into the 21st century, the Fourfold Gospel is still being proclaimed as it was during the Third Great Awakening."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130326851911680,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:29:50.054Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:05:30Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:52:26Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"97981272-013d-4488-904b-0fc8230470e9","accessControl_ssim":["26816cc1-cefe-4c54-8eb1-c1158adf3a2b"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Identifying, developing, and empowering potential leaders in the local church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:05:29Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:33:48Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["ca80a8c0-744d-4d3f-aef0-2d4809ec6317"],"hasLease_ssim":["cdd8f0b1-dfc9-4955-ad86-132a23bc29f5"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Garth M Rosell"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Glenn C Prescott"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Leadership--Religious aspects--Christianity","Parishes"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis looks at how churches can identify potential leaders in their congregations who have leadership qualities, abilities, and skills; how churches can then develop these identified potential leaders to the point of being prepared for leadership positions; and, after identifying and developing these potential leaders, how churches can then empower them to actually become involved in ministry leadership. However, rarely do they achieve a balanced blend of all three relationships in mission. The thesis of this paper is that a western evangelical mission society could remain centrally committed to pioneer missions (mission-to-world), while also nurturing healthy mission-with-church and mission-with-mission relationships. The author hypothesizes that in order to achieve this, the mission society must have a clear identity as a nurturer of pioneer 'apostolic bands' (mission teams), a flexible ecclesiological framework centered in foundational New Testament teaching, and an experience of missional interdependence with the new churches and their mission-sending groups based on the 'apostolic bond' (the relationship between the gospel messenger and those who receive Christ through that person or group). The author concludes that, though it is possible, it is difficult."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131765161590784,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:52:41.734Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:05:01Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:41:38Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"62afc7f1-4b0c-4ce8-8521-28c600956217","accessControl_ssim":["73e61171-0f1d-499e-af9d-f3a7914574f8"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Healthy Christianity as the answer to the national dilemma existing in modern Russia"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:05:00Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:01:26Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["90a1b8be-f932-48cb-922b-2ff778cd7d44"],"hasLease_ssim":["441a859d-8842-4651-ac43-abfeeb29e1f7"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Kenneth L Swetland"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"location_tesim":["Russia"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Peter N Sautov"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Religion","Christianity and culture"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Throughout its history, Russia has always been in some moral and spiritual crisis, and in the last decade the state of affairs has worsened. The Russian Orthodox Church with its lack of spiritual Reformation and its suppression of evangelistic movements could not change the moral values of Russian society. Because of persecution the Russian Evangelical Church never had the opportunity to affect the society. Sadly, the Western Christian organizations that came to Russia in the late 1980s were not designed to fit the Russian environment and consequently had no moral impact on the Russian people. Thus, Russia faces a national dilemma: the need to overcome its chaos and become a true democratic society. Although past efforts have failed, Christianity still holds the key. Basic moral values need to be reintroduced in to the conscience and belief system of the Russian people. Only a healthy Christian Church can train up a new generation who will build a governmental and economic system based on the revealed truth of God's Word. It is the hope of the Russian Center for church Multiplication (RCCM), with its healthy church model, ten principles, evaluation, and accountability tools, that Russia will emerge as a country of moral stability. This is the hope of Russia."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131072809926656,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:41:41.456Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":413,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
