It takes a case study on an urban Chinese congregation in New York state with designed teaching material (six sessions) to be tested and evaluated as the method of research.  It concludes that Martin Luther's teaching on prayer is intertwined with his justification by faith and the Theology of the Cross.  Those who pray receive God's grace. The training was derived from the growth model practiced at Saddleback Community Church, as it was implemented in Toronto, Canada.  The dissertation reviews literature relevant to church growth theory and strategy.  It includes two data gathering surveys.  These surveys measure growth prior to and after the training.  The model provided good insight into training lay people for ministry as church planters. Twenty parishioners completed an assessment survey after the morning worship service on Sunday, October 3, 2004. Group members completed the assessment survey the first day of the group, October, 6, 2004. The group completed the post test on the last day of the group, December 22, 2004. The results indicate that group participants experienced some spiritual growth and confirmed three of the five goals of this project. The tool consists of ten sets of brief quotations from Christian spirituality resources, arranged topically. The author distributed the readings via e-mail and asked for reflective responses. Pre- and post-assessment surveys revealed that participants grew in appreciation for formational reading and reflective practice, developed an increased awareness of writings in the area of spiritual formation, and grew in their awareness of their relationship with God. This was achieved through a two weekend grief retreat and sixteen sessions of spiritual direction. Nineteen of the participants completed pre-test and post-test questionnaires to assess the impact of the formative event. The greatest benefit was in terms of increasing emotional and spiritual healing, promoting a greater experience of God, and learning how to express grief more constructively. My thesis is that the preaching of the gospel together with providing social ministry will have a positive impact on those who live in Hartford's troubled inner-city. The research included a likert scale questionnaire and a focus group using open-ended questions.  I successfully trained 38 persons to witness and make disciples in gang infested, crime ridden neighborhoods that surround Mount Moriah Baptist Church.
