The methodology of the project included the development and teaching of a course on the theology and practice of preaching, a period of participant implementation, and interviews of participants in the study toward an evaluation of the project. Participant response showed a greater or lesser benefit depending on willingness and ability to apply the learnings. Research was done by questionnaires administrated before and after each of 2 successive sessions of the institute. Also used were personal interviews of institute participants. Research showed that the institute was succeeding in teaching biblical knowledge. It did not succeed in motivating people to greater service in church or community. The author concluded that various factors entered into the cause of the failure. The project employed the use of various active teaching methods in order to include the different learning styles of the students.  The project demonstrates that the use of these active learning methods did result in a reduction in rote memorization and a significant improvement in the student's ability to retain what they were being taught. This is the central question answered by this thesis. A primary presupposition of this project is that when we involve the use of sight during the sermon event, our ability to remember what was said increases. In this study, the theoretical and theological analysis of remembering and memory are discussed in connection with the use of visuals for retention. Those who participated in the project as hearers were asked to evaluate some sermons that used visual aids and some that did not. It is the author's belief that the key to the revitalization of the church, spiritual and numerical, is effective evangelism. Yet in most local churches evangelism is not taught or practiced, given little or no financial support, and in many cases discouraged by pastors and denominational hierarchy. Through this Doctor of Ministry project Pastor Tom Vencuss developed and implemented a program of evangelism designed to develop a greater understanding of, and desire to do, evangelism within a mainline congregation. The author has studied the moving procedures used by the Lake Region, Northeastern, and Allegheny East conferences.  Included in the study is the impact that moving has on the pastors, their families, and the congregations.  Following a series of interviews, case studies and discussions with a moving review process team, the conclusion was, the conferences of focus needed to develop a formal moving process, rather than informal procedures.
