The overarching framework used in this project is what Eldin Villafañe refers to as 'the hermeneutical circle in social ethics.' The three steps of this paradigm have been explored from a systems thinking point of view. These three steps each ask a basic question: Clarification -- what is going on? Conceptualization -- what do the Bible and other pertinent disciplines say? Confrontation -- how do we respond? The first step involves doing careful social analysis to gain a broad contextual understanding of the issue at hand (introduction and chapter one). The second step requires biblical and theological reflection, again from a systemic perspective. This involves the examination of pertinent sources of literature and theology that in some fashion inform the issue (chapters two and three). The third step involves developing clear strategies which are consistent with a systemic view of reality and that flow out of the confluence of the first two steps (chapter five). A primary premise of this work is that leadership transitions in general will occur in the church, whether they are planned for or not. This reality is more complex in ethnic churches where oftentimes systemic approaches can be used to address a systemic situation. The primary aim of this study is to confront this reality with effective leadership transitions models and learning, using systemic theology as a guide for change."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130299954888704,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:29:24.404Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:20:14Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:33:51Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"3fb585e4-4f3d-4385-be8b-647dbd2a6f2a","accessControl_ssim":["daedcc53-b4d9-4bb6-9360-f85157551906"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Towards a postmodern approach to urban ministry: multi-ethnic leadership development at Cambridge Community Fellowship Church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:20:13Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:58:47Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["91248da9-07ab-4245-99cb-0ec51c34b044"],"hasLease_ssim":["0035506f-c32a-4cf6-9d1e-545d8b613829"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Eldin Villafañe"],"year_tesim":["2005"],"location_tesim":["United States"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Soong-Chan Rah"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Leadership--Religious aspects--Christianity","Race relations","Postmodernism","Evangelical Covenant Church","Minorities","Church work with immigrants","Cambridge Community Fellowship Church (Cambridge, Mass)"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis seeks to study leadership development and spiritual formation in the context of a postmodern, multi-ethnic, urban church. The complex system of Cambridge Community Fellowship Church served as the case study for this project. The framework for this study is provided by Eldin Villafañe's hermeneutical circle, which progresses as clarification (clarify the issue and the challenges at hand), conceptualization (applicable theological and sociological analysis), and confrontation (principles or next steps of addressing the issue). Clarification involves examining two of the central elements of CCFC, its postmodern ethos and its emergence from the immigrant experience. To that end, postmodern culture was studied from various angles. Additionally, the development of second generation ethnic American identity was also studied. Conceptualization involved the movement towards developing a relevant postmodern theology applicable in the urban context. Conceptualization also involved the application of systems thinking to unpack the system of CCFC in order to address specific issues at CCFC. Confrontation calls for the development of strategies and principles to address the various issues. The dramatic changes occurring in the demographic and cultural aspects of the American church call for an examination of the issues related to ministering to postmoderns, developing multi-ethnic ministry and ministry in the urban context."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130582336405504,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:33:53.704Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:20:13Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:17:13Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"19b2a605-1aab-4c89-bec7-c1b0b85e4a97","accessControl_ssim":["d1632c09-9269-4cd8-ab50-5b2f108ca1bd"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Sibling response to the disturbed child: fostering differentiation of self, boundary maintenance, balanced roles/power, and empathy to improve understanding of sibling relationships"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:20:12Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:53:06Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["0285ee26-693f-4eb6-bdf2-892d1590c001"],"hasLease_ssim":["4d54d207-7697-4106-acb5-fbb63bbd1722"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Denver Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["David R Osborn","Joan B Winfrey"],"year_tesim":["2005"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Larry J Watnemo"],"publisher_tesim":["Denver Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Child psychology","Siblings","Psychological tests"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Siblings do not understand sibling conflict. The author's thesis is that if siblings are taught to respond to a disturbed brother/sister through boundary maintenance, differentiation of self, balanced roles/power, and empathy, then understanding of sibling relationships will improve. This project integrated a biblical theology of brother/sister relationships with four family systems change constructs. A literature review critiqued systems theory and suggested that these constructs are compatible with scripture. Eight families participated in six therapy sessions from November 2004 through January 2006. Each family had one child between the ages of 10 to 18 with a DSM IV diagnosis. A pre-test/post-test research design utilizing the Brother-Sister Questionnaire (BSQ) measured the four family systems change constructs. Data from the Marginal Homogeneity Exact Test indicated that statistically significant change did occur among participating siblings, but no measurable change occurred among disturbed siblings or siblings' parents. The last of these three criteria is presumed to mean that outside financial support is usually debilitating for national churches because it imposes a danger of dependency. Consequently, Western missionaries, their churches and their agencies have been increasingly indisposed to giving generously -- even when they are dealing with the most impoverished people living in the least evangelized cultures. The thesis of this paper asserts that this nearly sacred formula is misunderstood and that it, therefore, is being misapplied. We must rethink the interplay of dollars, dependency and what it means to 'do the right thing' with our money as we pursue twenty-first century missions. In re-evaluating our stewardship priorities, missionaries should be more concerned for the definite disparity of wealth that their propensity to 'buy and keep' creates than they are for the potential dangers of dependency that a decision to share might engender. Using an interdisciplinary approach to analyze the dilemma posed by trying to keep wisdom and wealth in proper balance as we face a world full of needs, the following material attempts to answer the question whether Westerners ought to give or not to give in support of global evangelism. Encouraging maximum generosity as the path most reflective of God's heart on the matter, the author proposes a 'missionary Marshall Plan for the twenty-first century' to guide us in principle toward funding a 'war chest for world missions' with Western wealth. Reaching toward the unsaved poor, we must show that we care about their burdens by being willing to share from our bounty. The complexity of reaching a group with the gospel of salvation, that up until recently had been neglected, required a new ministry paradigm. This project was designed to understand that new ministry paradigm. To accomplish this, Dr. Eldin Villafañe's 'hermeneutical circle paradigm' for social ethics was used. The systemic interactions of the elements involved could be observed, evaluated and understood by asking three questions. The first question is clarification: what is the ministry issue? Or: why is this significant? The various elements in the system are identified, analyzed, and placed within the greater whole in order to get context and importance of the issue (introduction and chapter one). The second question is conceptualization: how do the Bible, theological thinking, and the social sciences impact and interact with this ministry issue? Here systemic reflection and other analysis can be brought with Scripture to establish key factors (elements) and principles necessary to support this new ministry paradigm (chapters two through four). The third question is confrontation: what are the outcomes or implications of the new ministry paradigm? Is further research needed? Are there ideas that are transferable? The results of planting churches among the upper classes flow from systemic elements that have been identified and understood (chapter five). The idea of reaching people whom Jesus said would be extremely difficult to reach does not excuse the church from reaching them. When mission and church structure themselves theologically and socially exclude or place barriers for them to come to Christ, then the Holy Spirit must find ways to break through in a way that more accurately reflects the Kingdom of God. The purpose of this study is to show one method that 'those who are rich in this world' can as Paul wrote to Timothy, 'take hold of the life that is truly life' (1 Timothy 6:9)."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130122641735680,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:26:35.305Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:19:41Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:22:28Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"65c4bab9-ce6b-4345-b8c6-3d7214ee69b5","accessControl_ssim":["dfc1b24c-8aba-428c-9305-056fcc599bbb"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A study of the Fresh Start Program in the context of the Australian society"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:19:39Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:06:34Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["c64375bb-aa39-48f7-b6b6-5b1c85405f26"],"hasLease_ssim":["cc334c9e-20f5-4c46-8895-56328e63866c"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Denver Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Joan B Winfrey"],"year_tesim":["2005"],"location_tesim":["Queensland"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Robert L Carner"],"publisher_tesim":["Denver Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Church history","Marriage","Remarriage","Divorce"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis is a combination of 'historical-descriptive' and 'action' research. To see if these characteristics are present in the ministry setting, a diagnostic tool is developed and administered to a sample of church leaders, identifying three leverage points.
