The manual may be used profitably by a church session or governing board to explore the foundational issues of church transformation and to actively set in motion a process for such change. The manual is comprised of a series of practical learning sections that may be distributed for independent reading and then discussed in a variety of group settings by sessions or governing boards: regular meetings, retreats, devotions, and workshops. Most often this will happen at regular meetings of the session or board in the form of 'compressed learning' - i.e. intensive, 'on the run' or 'squeezed' learning that uses exercises and reading assignments that can be handed out and discussed as a group. The manual is organized as follows. The Introduction sets forth the reality facing many, perhaps even most, mainline or 'old line' congregations today -- the 'deep change or slow death dilemma.' It then introduces the manual's basic structure and educational approach. The body of the manual treats the following topics. Part one examines the relationship between leadership and congregational transformation. Part two explores issues relating to the congregation's readiness for transformation. Part three looks at the obstacles to congregational transformation and outlines an eight-stage change process, recognizing that the process of transformation is not often 'neat,' but in fact frequently 'messy.' Part four identifies principles for keeping the process of congregational transformation going once it is under way, and focuses particular attention on the things pastors and lay congregational leaders can do in cooperation with God's grace to make this happen."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135595141005312,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:53:34.287Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:46:05Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:33:26Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"865a6b68-08e0-4dce-9742-d9e0a2b4742a","accessControl_ssim":["13b2f6a9-3a03-473f-bba0-7676268b688a"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Church-establishing variables: a case study of Calvary Community Church, Navan, Ireland"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:46:04Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:05:23Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["4249e2cf-1e7d-4f43-b121-76a7b1c4323a"],"hasLease_ssim":["d4f7fdc6-3f33-4f41-b04b-521fec4abc6f"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Michael Pocock","Mark H Heinemann"],"year_tesim":["2005"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Dan W Stott"],"keyword_tesim":["Tests and measurements in religion"],"publisher_tesim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Religion and sociology","Calvary Community Church (Navan, Ireland)","Church development, New"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This research project was a case study of God's providential work that focused upon the circumstantial and controllable variables that God used through the lives of people including the church planter to establish Calvary Community Church in Navan, Ireland. The major research hypothesis underscoring the project was that establishing a local church was dependent upon circumstantial and controllable variables. Circumstantial variables were any factor outside the influence or control of the church planter. Controllable variables were any factor within the influence or control of the church planter. These two key concepts (i.e. circumstantial and controllable variables) were the foundation stones upon which the research project collected, recorded, analyzed, concluded, and drew practical points of ministry application. Furthermore, a comprehensive review of church planting literature identified a framework for analyzing circumstantial and controllable variables, and a survey of the church members identified, clarified, and quantified additional information relevant to a case study approach. Ultimately, learning how circumstantial and controllable variables factored into the establishment of Calvary Community Church beneficially demonstrated how a church planter might use these two major variables for planning, executing, and evaluating a church planting ministry."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["8322f611-a593-413a-8bcd-0011fba52dc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130556015050752,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:33:28.602Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:46:02Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:01:02Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"70426288-4dc2-449b-b4ba-190ae7b38017","accessControl_ssim":["17ae62ae-0303-40ba-b60b-e7977371d8dc"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The development of a seminar on pastoral ethics and professional boundaries to be used in a Clinical Pastoral Education program of the Verdery Center for Pastoral Counseling, Healing, and Pastoral Education"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:45:53Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:25:15Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["bf093c75-5960-497f-bc29-9aa2e3aca3b3"],"hasLease_ssim":["f077e17e-5017-4eba-926b-4b69db774014"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["William Harkins"],"year_tesim":["2005"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Robin D Booth"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Clinical pastoral education","Verdery Center (Atlanta, Ga)","Clergy--Professional ethics"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Numerous religious bodies, associations and judicatories have been confronted with abuses perpetrated on parishioners, clients, patients and others by clergypersons who come under their jurisdiction. The New Testament provides not only some principles for establishing and maintaining healthy churches and structures for the missionary work, but it also offers models for collective leadership, empowering leadership and culturally sensitive leadership. At the same time balance could be maintained between the Spirit's leadership and the structures. The author uses the evaluative method. His aim is to identify the factors which are crucial in creating a balance between the Spirit's leadership, and the structures necessary for healthy churches and missions. He applies also phenomenological method. As a conclusion the author asserts that mission organizations and national churches should be more concerned with structures that can affirm and support the unity of different local churches. Lack of such structures brings independent and isolated local congregations that can only contribute to world missions in a limited way. Churches must find a balance between visionary leaders and assisting managers. The main purpose of leadership is to empower people to build up the body of Christ. Because mission work is now understood as being from everywhere to everywhere, culturally intelligent coaching is needed. New sending countries are especially in need of relevant structures, but at the same time, old mission countries have become stagnated without having an attitude of life-long learning. This dissertation demonstrates that it is possible to build clear structures while maintaining the leadership of the Holy Spirit."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132387319480320,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:02:35.070Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:45:05Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:06:01Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"9231973b-a549-49fd-9b78-efc7ca3ce446","accessControl_ssim":["484dd79b-63f1-4571-b2d4-1a781e5d7c8f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Sabbath keeping: a faithful response to our prevailing culture"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:45:05Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:25:01Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["ce9865dc-4ec5-417a-8251-1e6121998e7d"],"hasLease_ssim":["93b258d4-07b0-4552-8900-c6b91183084b"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Stanley P Saunders"],"year_tesim":["2005"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Douglas R Gilreath"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Civilization, Modern","Sabbath","Women--Religious life","Rest"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Many of my church members, in particular the young adult females, often feel overwhelmed by the demands of their work, families, and schedules.
