It opens with the Spirit of God moving or migrating across the face of the waters and ends with the book of Revelation being written by John while he is in exile on the isle of Patmos. The key event for Christians is the birth of Jesus, the refugee Christ. The text outlines the migration narrative and compares and contrasts the relationship between the treatment of migrants, immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers of today with those of that time period. The predominant term used for these groups in the text is 'strangers.' Theologically, the text develops the need for and method to practice inclusive hospitality in response to the strangers in the United States during the 21st century. Inclusive hospitality is developed by embracing the diversity of the Trinity and the teachings of the Bible. God, the creator, repeatedly mandates hospitality to strangers in the Hebrew Bible. Christ Jesus comes as the refugee, migrant, stranger and, in addition, models acceptance of and hospitality towards strangers. The Holy Spirit is presently with us, sent by Christ to guide and direct our response in the kairos moment in which we live. God continues to come as the stranger and we are challenged to respond with inclusive hospitality. The theology of the mystic Howard Thurman is also used to aid in responding to the strangers in the land. In responding, the decision to choose between God's law and man's law sometimes becomes a necessity. This issue is addressed with a chapter that provides an overview of immigration law to aid in understanding present-day immigration questions. In addition to providing information on immigrants, migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers, the text offers a variety of teaching and worship materials. These include studies on the variety of immigrants, worship materials, general information, and three educational programs. They are a seven-session study that gives an overview of the immigration categories; a five-session study, 'Immigration: blessing or curse,' which seeks to have the participants decide; and a refugee study guide for children, youth, and adults. In addition, other educational materials are provided to facilitate an understanding of the importance of developing a theology of inclusive hospitality to welcome the strangers in the land -- because once we were strangers in the land of Egypt."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799720892360556544,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T03:13:11.744Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:48:11Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:22:46Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"447bd280-e89f-486d-a9e3-9b15f7077326","accessControl_ssim":["8d1aa21d-c432-4f18-a40d-ea69b400775d"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Seeking the symbolic structure of Eucharist"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:48:10Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:07:18Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["a70cc2da-f14f-40a8-adc6-71913ac8d58c"],"hasLease_ssim":["3be691ba-c90c-4b42-8255-00bd14a2b5e0"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Cecilia A Ranger"],"year_tesim":["2006"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Pamela H Miles"],"publisher_tesim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Christian art and symbolism","Anthropology and religion"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This study refutes the binary (male/female) understanding of biblical anthropology. A woefully inadequate, often dualistic, misreading of Scripture, this assumption has long obscured the symbolic structure of Eucharist. This Dissertation/Project reorients Christian anthropology within the triadic paradigm of Hebrew and Christian symbolism. It builds on the 1960's work of social anthropologist Mary Douglas who argued Old Testament Hebrew purity rules and ritual implied a well-defined symbolic system rooted in social organization. Evidence from archaeology, anthropology, and Scripture suggests that biblical symbols are indeed part of a systematic symbolic matrix whose rules 1) safeguard a social order modeled on the cosmic balance of earth (male), seas (female), and sky (symbolic language) and 2) inform our awareness of Trinity."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["38714359-d032-4ed0-ae3f-cb82c8f65a92"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799717721126993920,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:22:47.420Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:48:11Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:27:57Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"c8196f15-6778-4528-9401-3a5211f7b79a","accessControl_ssim":["5e3a3576-1cac-4c60-b703-2c82a8e0f023"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A cry for leadership"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:48:10Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:52:43Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["aed58df1-b1aa-451d-8001-a122a468080a"],"hasLease_ssim":["cef4da1f-e0bb-42a3-b49d-14d8edc41648"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Lewis A Parks"],"year_tesim":["2006"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. With effective leadership any human institution or organization can flourish and grow in the ways that organization deems important. Without effective leadership, organizations falter and decline, failing to accomplish their expected or hoped-for outcomes. This thesis will examine the leadership of the United Methodist Church from John Wesley and Francis Asbury to the present. The church's leadership applied in the past and in the present will be compared with the literature and theory of leadership in both business and church genres to assess the current state of the church. The conclusion will be a number of suggestions for ways to assure effective leadership in the church at all levels. This study also includes in-depth case studies of five congregations which have had long-term and consistent pastoral leadership."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799721821686202368,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T03:27:58.017Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:48:10Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:38:06Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"f8db691d-4e5d-450b-9afa-4a9c183d8721","accessControl_ssim":["abad46fb-531f-4fb7-8d47-b91a12bb06a8"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Creating an accountable disciple community by sharing life and faith in a small group"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:48:10Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T05:14:15Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["293ee204-a346-4532-b18e-543b3ee54387"],"hasLease_ssim":["3fc608b9-87ed-4a74-96ff-fcdb8cf5fa13"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Lewis A Parks"],"year_tesim":["2006"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min.
