This study determined, through surveys, personal interviews, and observation, the processes used in the change.  The most important thing I discovered was that some pastors feel a real confusion about their leadership role in their congregations. They are finding that the model of servant leader, as they understand it, is inadequate for many situations they are facing. It employs practical theology methodology to arrive at foundational principles and guiding insights for the spiritual formation of lay ministers. Training lasted six weeks. Each weekly session involved classroom instruction, small group activity, and worship.  Participants met project goals.  In particular, their after-training prayers of healing for others were more wholistic and evidenced use of greater personal, intimate language in approaching and petitioning God. There were three methods employed to raise the spiritual consciousness and experiential level: i) teaching ii) training and iii) praxis.  Two surveys and a final evaluation helped determine the congregation's experience and the impact of the project.  Results show that the project was well received; positive impact was felt on being a Christ-centered, caring and understanding the triune community.  Negative experience was felt on being a compassionate community. Effectiveness of the program was evaluated by African American male and female pastors. Ratings were grouped and analyzed by gender; differences were not statistically different. Both groups affirmed value in the program's capacity to facilitate family discussions about organ donation and to underscore the need for donation in African American communities. To a lesser extent, evaluators responded favorably to the program's capacity to correct informational barriers. A four-week sermon series on the purpose and importance of a deacon ministry served as the first chief component of the project.  Second, the director led the church in the process of nominating, electing, and ordaining deacons to serve Immanuel Baptist Church.  Third, after a diaconate was established, the project director provided a training course for the deacons. The church began without the acquisition of land for a permanent site. This paper sought to discern how the dislocated status of the church served to shape congregational identity, particularly in relation to the intention of becoming a missional community. However, the author discovered that switching to a method geared to predominantly postmodern hearers can leave more traditional hearers feeling 'left behind.' Over the sermons in this project he explored postmodern preaching methods, but also checked in with more traditional hearers. Data was gathered by survey and interviews in a group setting. For small churches, there are ways that we can preach to new generations so that none are 'lost' or 'left behind.' This thesis discusses variety in preaching styles as a way to be inclusive for all those worshiping in smaller congregations.
