Findings include the critical nature of a 'safe' nonjudgmental community in explorations of faith questions and of an intellectual element that challenges and stimulates their faith. Two groups of ten from a retirement community participated in workshops where they received reading assignments from 'No Wrinkles on the Soul' by Richard Morgan every week for five weeks. Participants took a questionnaire before and took the same questionnaire at the end of five weeks to assess changes in perception of life satisfaction. The emphasis varied by individual, but all participants identified both gains and losses. The qualitative methodology includes a survey, transcribed interviews and a focus study group that engages Robert Webber's worship perspectives from Ancient-Future Faith: Rethinking Evangelicalism for a Postmodern World. I surveyed and had focus groups with these churches. I wanted to understand why these churches are successfully reaching unchurched Brazilians, Americans, and Hispanics for Christ. Their evangelistic approach has caused, in my opinion, a reversal in the lack of congregational growth within the American context. The body of the dissertation is divided into four parts. A literature review that highlights the core issues gleaned from previous research as well as literature pertinent to the subject of discipleship specifically geared to developing leaders is provided. The procedure and research method used is given. A report of the results of the research is provided. Finally, conclusions and research implications are given. The author believes the continuing development of leaders consistent with the discipleship model found in the NT is vital to the life and ministry of Coppell Bible Fellowship, the church that the author planted over ten years ago and remains the pastor of today. Six participants (18-35 years old) had lunch six times with the preacher. They gave sermon feedback, discussed the upcoming lectionary texts, and participated in an exit interview. Ten pastors were interviewed about membership, visitor follow-up, involvement without pastors, and restoration of those who left one church for another local church. They were exposed to concepts involving the greater church body in the restoration process especially when there had been immorality or divisiveness. The report included research, meditation practice sessions, a preparatory sermon, post/pre questionnaires and an evaluation of the entire process.  The theological dialogue partners included Dale Andrews and Howard Thurman. The results  were a better understanding of the congregation's approach to worship and their desired outcome of worship. Drawing on organizational theory, congregational systems theory, grief and transition research, and interim ministry practice, the author identifies six goals for presbyteries of the PC(USA) to assist congregations during this period.  A manual was developed, featuring training modules in Appreciative Inquiry, and other resources to reframe the crisis and to empower lay leadership.  Structural strategies include transition teams and temporary supply ministers.
