The revival methods at the heart of the controversy, along with the question of human ability in salvation, are analyzed from a biblical perspective. The methods of the two most prominent mass evangelists of the last sixty years, Billy Graham and Luis Palau, are also examined. Using Dr. Eldin Villafañe's 'Hermeneutical Circle,' this document starts with a clarification of the problem, mining information from observations, experience and written materials. Social analysis, study of urban Christian literature, relevant biblical texts, hexagoning and implementing ministries around the felt needs of urban Christian leaders were the methodology.  This research reveals that churches in Boston and Springfield are multiplying. Though resisted by most of mainstream Pentecostalism, it is the author's contention that 'Sonship' ideas heavily influence much of modern Pentecostal teaching. It identifies some leading ministries who were instrumental in establishing 'Sonship' within the mainstream of the Pentecostal Movement. Chapter one reviews the history of Emley's Hill United Methodist Church from its founding six years after the founding of Methodism in America in 1784 through the first two hundred years, which were most notably marked by a constant cycle of part-time pastors.  Chapter two lays out the polity framework of the United Methodist Church within which the author had to operate.  Chapter three cites pertinent readings that impacted the author's understanding of the setting and the problems faced.  Chapter four presents the project design, describing the work used in gathering the data necessary for renewal.
